It doesn't need to be diablo but it's silly to completely dismiss the most successful game of it's genre when it comes to design principles that made this entire genre popular in the first place. Diablo did things right, analyzing diablo's success and learning how to incorporate it in their own game will make it better. There's an amazing 1-hour video from a week or two ago where the creators of PoE talk about their success and how they made their game succeed, and a HUGE part of that was by analyzing diablo and taking inspiration from it.
Take a look at Anthem for example... It has been exposed that Bioware refused to acknowledge Destiny 1&2 during development saying stuff like 'this isn't destiny 2' whenever it was brought up during meetings. As a result, the game is a massive failure that's repeating a lot of the same mistakes that destiny 1 & 2 made.
Path of exile never even tried to hide that they were a spiritual successor to Diablo 2, they rode that train because everybody was hating on Diablo 3 in those days and PoE embraced their chance.
Tbh I prefer PoE then Diablo 3, and it's even free to play and not p2w, Blizzard has gone dark for me since quite a while for me, I bought Diablo 3 for like almost 80$ and it was my worst purchase of all times, but the hype was quite big and "cheated" me into buying that turd excuse of game
But Diablo 2 still remains to be my favourite ARPG of all times, but hey tha'ts just me, I probably have spent thousands of hours on Diablo 2 alone, which says a lot. I wouldn't even mind if they made Diablo 4 as a remake of diablo 2 with better graphics and maybe some new content, perharps a whole new act that would continue Diablo 2 story or new zones to play to make it interest even while giving me old times nostalgia, guess Blizzard is getting worse and worse and that mobile version of next Diablo killed the franchise for me
RIP Diablo, you will be remembered
In fact, games like PoE and Diablo 3 do not have this problem for the simple reason that in single player mode you must always be connected to the internet and connect to their servers, so they monitor the situation and ban any abuse.
Of course if the characters you play in offline mode can't be played in online mode and vice versa then it's different.
