You do not need to play the game twice bcs you can transfer your character from classic borderlands to enhanced's. You would still need to complete achievements for both, but most of the achievements would be done by transfering the character to the new version of the game.
If you are a completitionist, i would advuce you to play classic game, but enhanced version is the better of them. I would say buy both, anyway the experience of borderlands 1 is unique. I myself do not regret to have played the game at least 5 times entirely.
As you noted it does look like you can transfer many of the achievements and get most of the others with relatively little amount of work (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1747108465), though it does appear, per that link, that there are about 6 achievements that require a 99% second playthrough. I'll likely just bite the bullet and start with the classic version so I can ultimately carry over.
Luckily the first 3 expansions will not need replay for their main story on Enhanced, but you will need to revisit DLC 4 on your Playthrough 2 to speedrun its story (but make sure to keep an eye on your Tannis scrap quests). You'll also need to revisit DLC 3 for the optional objective achievements, like the loot midgets and Crawmerax.
Wow. That sounds like a subject for a guide.
Generally I did mean that anecdote as a positive way to say that you probably won't need more than 20 hours on Enhanced in total. Either way, make sure you enjoy your time where it counts, in the OG version!
With regards to the MP achievements, does it make any difference what level I am? I started yesterday and I'm at level 15, but not sure if it's beneficial to be lower or higher if playing with a higher player. I would assume higher, but didn't know if enemies spawn at lower levels with a lower character. I get the impression if I complete quests but don't turn them in, they can count toward the 15 coop missions - do you know if that is true?
Thank you for this blurb as it gave me an idea. When I got to the vault on my first playthrough on the GOTY version, I closed the game and made a copy of my main save file then renamed it to another "number". When I opened the game again, it recognized that copied save file as an exact but separate copy of that playthrough at that point. When I eventually finished and ported into the Enhanced version, I was able to load up that save after doing the playthrough to get all the other quests, bypassing that "void" of time you referred to.
