Version Mismatch (crossplatform)
Hi, my friends and I used to run Civ games just fine, but now that my friend uses a Mac we get the version mismatch error. I poked around and couldn't find any recent information regarding this issue. Is there a fix for this, or a workaround? Any info would help, thanks

Not sure if you can run wine on mac last time I played around with Apple was Snow Leopard (they dropped support for Rosetta and I only ever cared about there PPC software and hardware) never got wine to work back then, but on Linux I can install the windows version through wine with decent performance I just use Lutris to manage and launch Windows games that don't work with Steam's built in proton such as Civ V's Windows version, there is a per existing Lutris script for Civ V I'd recommend using the DX9 version at lest on my system even dxvk DX10 crashes. Or you could just install Ubuntu or Steam OS on a second partion or in a VM for free I think the native Linux version of Civ V still has cross plat, but the aforementioned Lutris/wine running the Windows version will work.

Hope this helps someone!

Cannot Play with Friend
My friend has a macbook and I have an Asus. We were trying to play in a private match but it says the version we have is different. We both have the complete DLC collection and everything. Is it just because he has a mac and they don't really work with anything else? Our launchers for the game itself don't look the same either, so there's obviously something weird happening.

Yeah they dropped cross plat with Mac when they updated from 32bit to 64bit, because Apple killed 32bit apps and are trying to kill 3rd party apps as a whole. Windows and Linux user can still play together though. Just checked playing with a Windows user this last week using the native Linux build for several hours.

Honestly at this point just tell him to dual boot Ubuntu or SteamOS which is free vs boot camp, because gaming on Apple already is rougher then Linux and it's going to get worse from here on in as Steam is pushing devs to support Linux instead of Mac and building WINE directly into the Steam Client with DXVK for Linux users to play existing Windows games. I game almost 100% on Linux, only games I have issue with use Battleye Anti cheat which do non standard Windows things anyways. Civ V has has a native Linux build that runs really well, for games with out Linux builds just enable SteamPlay in your Steam settings will let you play 90% of Windows games through Steams built in WINE implementation (only for Linux user).
Dual boot basics same for linux distros including SteamOS...

just use the Apple DiskUtility to shrink your main partion last I checked it was still in Mac OS version up to High Serria and more then likely still in the latest Mac OS.

The above-mentioned fix involves using the Beta version and at the same time, unchecking Gods & Kids so that it's not being downloaded. The user in question is on PC and all other Mac users who have previously tried those steps have failed to make it work.

Hi all,

Thanks to those guys, I managed to make it work. Cheers mates !

This can be fixed by using the beta code "ineedlegacyaccess" in the game properties and then selecting legacy from the beta menu on the mac. I guess it rolls you back to an older version of the game.

I am now able to play with my friend who plays on mac (I am on PC) yay!

Has anyone got this working using legacy access? I tried but the game crashes after choosing start up civs...
I got the same issue and looked up bug reports of v1.3.9 (legacy) made in 2013 then found without GaK, the game runs just fine. I mean the solution isn't even close to satisfactory but at least I can still play the game with my mate... Hope this helps.

- Me (running a Mac, Mojave OS) and my friend (running a Windows) both downloaded AND activated the legacy mode (I am not certain whether or not it is necessary for Win users to do so as only the Mac version was updated though)

- I, as the host of the online multiplayer game, disabled the Gods and Kings extension.

It worked fine.

Problems :

- Disabling the G&K extension won't disable any game's mechanics due to the BNW extension using it, but only disable civs : I believe they are the following : The Netherlands, the Celts, the Maya, Carthage, Byzantium, the Huns, Austria, Ethiopia, and Sweden

- I encountered crashes launching solo games

To be clear, this issue is NOT fixed. There are some convoluted workarounds, but they all require a fair amount of technical ability to implement (downgrading OS, running emulators, etc.), and even then there seems to be an unpredictable chance of success.

I've tried reaching out and requesting this be fixed to 2k games, who instantly replied back to take it up with Aspyr (which implies that they deal with this issue frequently). I then reached out to Aspyr and received an automated response and haven't heard anything more in over a month.

If you're reading this and want this issue fixed, please reach out to Aspyr via their support page: https://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and let them know that there are still many players who want this game to remain playable.

Aspyr has also been referring people to 2K. I find this whole approach a bit weird, because Civ5 still sells, so both Aspyr and 2K should work together to find a solution.

As it seems like this is going to be at least semi-permanent. I have resorted to creating a windows partition specifically to play civ5 and other games that do not work with macOS Catalina. This can be done easily with Boot Camp Assistant: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201468#more, which comes pre-installed with most macs. This is obviously not ideal... but it will solve the problem!
