Lost network connection, in single player...?

I was just playing a single player round of Civ 5, when out of the blue a little box pops up saying I've lost network connection. I instantly open my steam overlay to make sure I'm still connected to the internet and steam, which I was. So I think "okay must just be a problem with the games servers, shouldn't have an issue with my single player game". I close the overlay, and click on the ok button on the disconnected box, it was the only option there. As soon as I click the button the game takes me right back to the start menu giving me no chance to save!

What the hell just happened? Why did I just got disconnected from my offline single player game because of a network issue? As far as I am aware this is not diablo 3 and I do not need a constant internet connection to play single player, is this not true? *scratches head*

I have never had this happen, or heard of it. I do know that the game runs without an Internet connection just fine (I have played it offline on several occassions).

Your pop-up box was a steam notification from the overlay informing of Steam client disconnected. I see this occasionally during long games and Steam normally reconnects itself after a few minutes. This does not affect Civ V single player gameplay (except you might miss achievement triggers whilst offline).

Not sure what happened with your game, seems like an Overlay error? I've crashed Civ V once or twice by Alt+tabbing out of the game with the overlay service active/displayed in-game. I normally have no problems browsing the overlay whilst in game though.

Also Civ auto-saves every 10 turns so you can reload your lost game. However it might be useful to set this to every 2 or 3 turns and limit the amount of autosaves to 5 :-P

This defintely wasn't a steam notification, it had the same graphic style as any UI element within Civ 5, and as I said in my OP I instantly opened up my overlay as soon as this box came up and successfully used my friends list/ other overlay features so I know steam was still connected. Also as soon as I clicked the ok button on the notification, the mouse pointer turned into the little spinning globe loading icon that Civ 5 uses whenever the game is loading, before sending me back to the main menu.

After some google searching I was able to find one other person this exact thing happened to, so it doesn't seem to be a very common thing. I will take your advice and shorten the time between my games autosaves incase this ever happens again. It was very annoying having to do over close to 10 turns in a marathon length game on a huge map =P

I just had the same problem. Sitting here playing a Singleplayer game and my internet went out. Got the "Network Connection Lost" Civ5 pop-up (same one you get when playing multiplayer) and of course it closes the game to the main menu.

I really hope this doesn't happen from now on with every time my internet goes out (which is a problem I've had with AT&T for 5+ years now with no fix after countless hours with techs and repairmen).
First time I've ever seen this problem though, so I can only assume something changed with the latest patch or it's just a low chance random bug. /shrug

i know this thread is kinda dead but hate starting new ones when they're already up there.

this just happened to me in a single player game, sent me back to the main menu.

didn't think much of it, it happened recently in a multiplayer game and i just went and grabbed the autosave and we carried on, but with my single player game i had no auto saves to grab! i've never needed to retrieve a single player auto save before so i don't know if this is common in my game, there's certainly not many saves in there.

mine was steam going off briefly as i was on skype with a friend and he said 'why's your steam gone off' just seconds before the pop up.

Yep, this problem just happened to me too. It was definately an ingame screen that popped up, and not a steam one. After clicking "ok" (or something along those lines, which also was the only option) it just instantly sent me to the main menu.. :/ I just lost my major move and victory over Rome :'(

I'm just here to add myself to this list. I'm sure this is a really rare problem, but it happened. I'm glad I had autosave for every 5 turns (ironically it happened on my the last turn before the next autosave)

Just happened to me ...also to a friend at exactly the same time. Why the heck this happened on a single player match, I can´t understand. Between this and the multiplayer connection issues I´m starting to get pissed off

I'll add myself to the list, I had just started playing a new game in Single Player and after 30 ish turns - I apparently lost connection to Steam. The game shut down without saving my state.. Quite annoying. It did say "CONNECTION TO HOST LOST" and had an "Okay" button..

I also have that issue... + while internet connection is lost during loading singleplayer game entire Civ 5 crashes without any message. Offline mode works fine but still it is annoying if you need to switch to offline every single time you play civ -.-
