Upgrade path that requires iron:
Warrior-> Swordsman-> Longswordsman-> Musketman-> Rifleman-> Great War Infantry-> Infantry-> Mechanized Infantry
Anti-Mounted/Tank path (no iron):
Spearman-> Pikeman-> Lancer-> Anti-Tank Gun-> Attack Helicopter
Every unit type has it's own upgrade path. There are very few exceptions when unit jumps from one upgrade path to an another. One exception is when warrior is upgraded to spearman in ancient ruins. Reason for this upgrade path jump is simple, warrior can't be upgraded to a swordsman because of it's iron requirement.
