Windows 10 Issues
Some users are experiencing problems with the game (and indeed lots of other games) after upgrading to Windows 10. The following steps have resolved it for most users:

Make sure you have the most up to date drivers available from the GPU maker. This means Intel, AMD or nVidia, not your system OEM. OEMs are rarely up to date with the drivers they provide.

Check that Windows hasn't mysteriously made parts of your user folder ("My documents" etc) read-only, for mysterious and unexplained reasons.

Either uninstall and reinstall the game, or verify game files.

Make sure the executable is not set to any compatibility mode, or run as administrator. If that doesn't work, try enabling those options instead (but they shouldn't be necessary.

Some people have reported needing to run one or more of the redists that come with the game affected (such as a vc redist and directx); you may have to select a 'repair' option when you run them.

There is a separate pinned thread about the error 2 problem after the Win10 anniversary update. That appears to be a purely Steam issue with the update, and reporting it on these forums (after all the many who have so far) isn't going to resolve it any faster.

donald i have reinstalled the game, and verifyied the steam files. It plays nice for a day or so and then crashes. I should not have to keep reinstalling the game over and over and tweaking it here or there every couple of days to make it work.
No you shouldn't. But the game runs for you as well.
What you are experiencing is a clear sign something is off in your system. You should look for that.

uninstaling and re-installing worrked for me. I can not use the tablet mode though if I want the game to save correctly. using the tablet mode produces a game that will crash after a few hours of time.

Tried verifying game files, re-installed twice, tried running in compability modes.
Nothing happens, absolutely nothing.
My profile icon goes green for a second or two and then just goes back to being blue.

does this apply if you have trouble with mods

I can start up my game perfectly fine but ever since I have upgraded to Windows 10 the whole Civ 5 menu is impossible to read and pixelated, almost as if the wrong things are in the wrong place. I would post a screenshot but it doesnt seem to be letting me to. Has anybody has been experiencing this or is it just me?

Check that your documents directory, games directory or the Civ5 directory under it haven't been set read-only.

I was able to fix Civ 5 for me by clicking Start > typing in "Check for Updates" clicking on System Settings and downloading the lastest updates on my AMD from there.

For some reason my PC hadn't downloaded them automatically, if any of you haven't checked this out yet.
Give it a try. It'll take about 1 hour or so.

(But I still have an issue ingame I can't tab out or toggle Steam while ingame. Any ideas how to fix this?)

Do you have a hybrid graphics system (integrated graphics and a dedicated GPU in the same system)? A lot of people seem to have to re-apply their settings to make games play on the dedicated GPU.

The game is automatically setting the AA to off; it greys out the other MSAA options. Also, shadow quality, terrain tesselation & shadow are all set to low and don't save any other choices; nvidia's dsr is also not working, any resolution above 1080p is gltched.

Sadly none of the tips posted here worked for me. The game worked fine previously on windows 8.1 (on a family-shared account) but now on windows 10 it only works on 1080p, no AA. Running the DX11 version makes no difference at all. The game does not create any DX11 ini in the My Games folder; it's almost like the game thinks I only have a DX9 computer (my card is a gtx 980 ti)

The Documents folder is always read-only (I don't know how to force windows to change that), but I don't think that's the problem. I have several other games in the My Games folder but Civ 5 is the only one having issues.

The geforce experience doesn't allow me to change the game settings. I'd love to play it like I did before, on DX11, downsampling from 1440p. I have no idea what's going on :(

I'd try a clean removal of your graphics drivers and install the latest ones fresh. I'd also ask about hybrid graphics, but that seems unlikely with that gpu.

I've noticed that they come and go. But if you ever run into a problem, never use windows 8 touch, and run Steam as Administrator.

I tried all of the above. I am running Windows 10 and playing Civ 5 Windows 8 touch-enabled(though I dont have a touchscreen). I can play for about 2 turns, then it crashes and Windows cannot find a solution for the problem.
