Official RE2 Troubleshooting & Issue Reporting Thread
"If you see one of those things—uniform or not—you do not hesitate. You take it out...or you run. Got it!?" - Marvin Branagh, Resident Evil 2

We hope you’re all enjoying or will be enjoying Resident Evil 2 / BIOHAZARD RE:2 shortly! While we hope all of our fans will have a great time with the game, there will always be some cases here and there where the game may not function correctly under certain environments and / or hardware combinations.

We’ve set up this troubleshooting and feedback thread for you all to share any technical issues you may be having with the game.

Before providing any reports, please ensure you've followed the steps below to rule out problems with your PC, Steam, or the game’s files:

Troubleshooting Guide

1. Check the game’s system requirements

Please make sure you meet the minimum requirements for the game, outlined on the bottom of the game’s Steam Store page; if you do not meet the minimum requirements for the game, this may result in poor framerate, or the game not running.

If you do meet the minimum specifications but not the recommended specifications, you may want to try turning down the graphics settings, if you haven't already. Please note that most graphical settings changes require the game to be restarted in order for the changes to take effect.

Some high end integrated graphics chips and modern laptop integrated GPUs may work, but have not been tested, nor are they officially supported by Capcom. If you’re using a laptop with a dual GPU dedicated graphics card and integrated graphics processor, we recommend disabling your integrated graphics via the BIOS settings prior to launching the game. For more information on accessing your BIOS, please see your laptop/motherboard manufacturer manual.

If you’re using a multi-GPU setup such as NVIDIA’s SLI or ATI’s Crossfire technologies, we recommend experimenting with disabling these settings, as they may cause compatibility issues with the game.

Capcom does not warrant nor officially provide technical support for PCs that do not meet the official, minimum system requirements.

2. Add the game’s folder and files to your anti-virus program’s exception / exclusion list

Some launching issues may be attributed to certain Anti-Virus software preventing the game executable from launching due to a false-positive error. We recommend users add all of the following files and folders to the Anti-virus and Firewall exclusion list to prevent this issue. If these files and folders were already added previously, try removing them from the exclusion list and re-adding them.

Note: To quickly access the following folders, press Windows Key + R then copy and paste the folder URL below.

re2.exe Default Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RESIDENT EVIL 2 BIOHAZARD RE2

Steam.exe Default Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

Steam AppData Default Location: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Steam

For a guide on adding exceptions to your anti-virus software, please visit one of the following links:
  1. Windows Defender[support.microsoft.com]
  2. Microsoft Security Essentials[answers.microsoft.com]
  3. Malwarebytes[www.malwarebytes.com]
  4. Avast Antivirus[www.avast.com]
  5. AVG Antivirus[support.avg.com]
  6. Kaspersky Anti-Virus[support.kaspersky.com]
  7. Webroot SecureAnywhere[www5.nohold.net]
  8. McAfee Antivirus (Steam Support guide)
  9. Bitdefender*[www.bitdefender.com]

*For Bitdefender, you will need to also add the game’s .exe file to the program’s Whitelist. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open Bitdefender
  2. Go to the Protection tab
  3. Click “View Feature”
  4. Click the gear icon inside the “Advanced Thread Defense” box
  5. Select “Add applications to the whitelist”
  6. Browse and navigate to the .exe file
  7. Once the .exe file is added, close Bitdefender and relaunch the game

3. Give administrator privileges to Steam and the game

Some users can get the game running properly by running Steam.exe in administrator mode. This can be done by right-clicking on the .exe file and selecting “Run as administrator.” If that doesn’t work, try running the game’s .exe file in administrator mode as well.

4. Update your Video/Graphics Drivers and Windows Operating System

Try updating your video card drivers, as oftentimes outdated drivers can cause a variety of issues ranging anywhere from in-game graphical problems, to the game not starting, and more.

For the latest Nvidia drivers, click here[www.nvidia.com].
For the latest AMD drivers, click here[support.amd.com].

Additionally, please ensure that Windows Update has been run and that all the latest updates have been installed on your operating system.

If you still experience issues, you may want to try performing a clean installation of the video driver set. This will remove any extraneous driver DLL files or game profiles that existed with the previous driver installation.

To do a clean video driver install, many enthusiasts use a third-party program called Display Driver Uninstaller[www.guru3d.com] (DDU), which completely removes components that were part of the original driver installation package.

  1. Run DDU and uninstall old video driver.
  2. Install the latest OEM video card driver and reboot your PC.
  3. Run the latest DirectX installer package[www.microsoft.com] and reboot your PC.

IMPORTANT! Please don't forget to reboot Windows upon completing a video driver installation. This will help reinitialize the driver and the graphics card using the new driver.

5. Check your graphics driver settings & computer power settings

To reiterate, some high end integrated graphics chips and modern laptop class discrete GPUs may work, but have not been tested, nor are they officially supported by Capcom. Laptops with dual GPUs, such as an Intel Integrated Graphics Processor + Nvidia Dedicated Graphics Card, may need additional configuration in the event the integrated processor is overriding the dedicated graphics drivers.

If using a dual Nvidia / Intel GPU, follow these steps:

  1. Install the latest Intel integrated drivers[downloadcenter.intel.com]
  2. Reboot your PC
  3. Open Nvidia Control Panel
  4. Click 'Manage 3D Settings'
  5. Go to 'Program Settings' and then select the game (if it is not in the list you can add it manually by clicking 'Add')
  6. Scroll down to 'Power Management Mode'
  7. Set it to 'Prefer Maximum Performance' / ‘High Performance Processor’ instead of 'Adaptive'
  8. Close Nvidia Control Panel and launch the game

If using a dual AMD “Switchable Graphics” GPU, follow these steps:

  1. Open AMD Catalyst Control Center
  2. Under “Switchable Graphics”, select the High Performance section and select the game (if it is not in the list you can add it manually by clicking 'Browse')
  3. Click ‘Apply’
  4. Close AMD Catalyst Control Center and launch the game

Additionally, double-check your desktop / laptop’s power settings by performing the following:

  1. If using a laptop, ensure the charger is connected
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Select Power Options
  4. Select “Change Plan Settings”
  5. Select “Change advanced power settings”
  6. From within the dropdown menu, select “High performance” and click ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’
  7. Launch the game

6. Update DirectX

We recommend downloading and running the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer[www.microsoft.com] to ensure DirectX is fully up to date.

7. Update your Windows Media Player codecs

Certain cutscene segments use video playback which relies on Windows' default Media Player codec.

If you're experiencing video playback issues during cutscenes, please try installing Microsoft's Media Feature Pack from the link below. Certain Windows editions, particularly in EU territories and Korea, may not have Windows Media Player and its codec preinstalled.

Windows 8 or newer: https://support.microsoft.com/ja-jp/help/3145500/media-feature-pack-list-for-windows-n-editions

Windows 7 series: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546

If you have separately installed another codec, there may be compatibility issues with certain video codec which may cause video corruption issues during gameplay. If you're using a different codec besides Media Feature Pack, please ensure the codec is configured so it does not run under Media Foundation.

8. Verify the game’s cache in Steam

Try verifying the game's cache in Steam. You can do so by following the steps outlined in this Steam support article (reposted below). This may find missing or damaged files that need to be repaired, even if you've just installed the game. You may also try temporarily disabling your anti-virus while verifying the cache or launching the game, as on occasion anti-virus programs may flag games or the files necessary to play them as a virus.

To verify the game’s cache, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and launch Steam
  2. From the “Library” section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu.
  3. Select the “Local files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game files...” button.
  4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
  5. Important: One or more files may fail to verify. This is normal for most Steam games. The files that fail to verify are local configuration files that should not be replaced as part of this process. You can safely ignore this message.

This process allows the Steam client to scan every single file you downloaded for this game, verify checksum of each, and compare that against the file manifest data on Steam's content server. If the file is missing or has a different checksum value, you will receive a message stating "X files failed to validate and will be reacquired." What this means is that some files have either been deleted, or may have been corrupted. Click “Close,” and Steam will automatically download and / or replace the problematic files.

If you still experience visual / audio-related issues or crashes, please provide the detailed information below.

A) Your System Specs

1) CPU name & model
2) Name / model of the desktop or laptop (if available)
3) Graphics card / chip model and the amount of VRAM
4) Video driver version number
5) System memory size
6) OS version (Windows 7, 8, 10, 64-bit/32-bit, etc. Please make special note in your specs if you are running Windows "N" and "K" editions that do not come with Windows Media Player.)
7) Anti-virus software name and version
8) Your monitor and/or HDTV model number (if using multiple displays, please provide all make and model numbers)
9) HDMI cable brand and model number (if available). Please confirm whether your HDMI cable is certified or compatible with 4K and HDR.
10) Your region (continent and/or country)

A good deal of this information, such as the graphics card model and VRAM, are available by running a DxDiag report.

To create a DxDiag report:
  1. Open a "Run" dialog in Windows. This can either be done by typing "run" into Start Search, or by holding the Windows key and pressing "R." (Either method works in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.)
  2. Type "dxdiag" (with or without quotes) into the box that comes up.
  3. From the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window, wait for the tool to gather the information it needs, then click "Save All Information..." which will ask you to save a text file, named "DxDiag.txt" by default. Save this file somewhere where it will be easy to find, then attach it in your response.

B) Your Graphics Settings

Your graphics settings for the game can be found in the re2_config.ini file, located in the game’s installation folder. Open the file using a word processor such as Notepad or Wordpad and copy and paste the text found inside.

C) Give as many details about your issue as possible

Please share your specific issue and the location(s) where you’re experiencing the issues – for example, if you’re having problems with the framerate, is it happening constantly, or is it during certain modes, during gameplay, etc.? The following information can greatly help as well:

  • Have you confirmed you’ve met at least the minimum system requirements for the game (See Step 1 in the Troubleshooting Guide)?
  • Where and when did the issue occur?
  • What were the character(s) doing when this issue occurred?
  • Did the issue resolve itself when you rebooted the game?
  • Please also attach any screenshots or video of your issue, preferably via a Dropbox[www.dropbox.com], Google Drive[www.google.com], or OneDrive[www.onedrive.live.com] link.

D) Detailed reproduction steps, if consistently reproducible

The more detailed info you can provide, the quicker the error can be attempted to be reproduced and investigated.

Thank you for your patience and support!

Best Regards,

Pin this information, either to this post or as a new one.

Use older nvidia driver for now to fix the lightning-bug (everything turns dark).
https://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/driverResults.aspx/137775/en-uk
Current driver v417.71 breaks the lightning in the game.

Several posts so far with no real answer. This at least make the game PLAYABLE.!

I noticed something odd while using the HDR mode. Whenever I take a screenshot through Steam hot key, the image look really washed out and almost low-res compared with what I'm seeing on my tv through Big Picture mode. With HDR turned off they look perfectly. It's weird.
Steam (unmodified) does not understand scRGB or HDR10 and cannot be used to take HDR screenshots.

My own framework (Special K) can be used to fix that problem unofficially. It will take the 16-bit FP or 10-bit HDR framebuffer and tonemap it to SDR so that it can be imported to Steam without going nuts. You should actually notice that the Steam overlay itself is also kinda busted in HDR mode, Special K has a fix for that too (including adjustable Steam overlay HDR brightness).

I can give you more details if you're amenable to third-party software. Valve sure isn't going to fix the problem any time soon :-\ Capcom's not really responsible to fix this problem, nor would they have the low-level experience necessary to fix the parts of the Steam overlay that I have.

I have issued patches and technical write-ups to Valve to get the ball rolling w/ partial HDR support, but they have never acknowledged receiving this information nor will they probably ever since I do not sell anything on Steam.

Yeah i was thinkinh the same specially the random crashs witch occurs in story mode..with both Leon and Claire...

I have succeed to try a trick for being able to not have freezes and crash just after (the famous CTD...)

Whenb locked the fps to 60 max en 60Hz (despite having a 144Hz monitor...well done Capcom... - -)

With Leon in A scénario (the very best )...no problem after all even with Claire in bis scénario... But ! With Claire in A scénairo the problems goe sback.... total freezes and crash absolutely random...

And with that since the beginning in the police station...

It without saying that see like that it's just IMPOSSIBLE to have and unlocked the infinite weapong huhuhu with this complete mess for stability very unstable...

SLi desactivated...and i was goes back in orange not red for the vram consumption (who is buggy too by the way...)

So what i have noticed:

It's not the fault to the EVGA Précision X1 software either the Creative audio... (no problel with Leon in A and almot Claire in B...except for Birkin in G3 to the very end...otherwise no problem during all his scénario Claire bis..)

But there with Claire in A..big problems again...

So i am wondering about the stability and code of this game..It's the ONLY game who make too much torubles for this....all the ones i have no problem at al..

I have try to follow a video and add the more Visual C+ i could and other for seeing...and update the driver for my 1080 Tis to the very last..just for seeing.

For the HDR it's also..very bad...i am coming back to the no HDR....who is much better so far (in sRGB otherwise it's too much darker...and in DX1 mode...)

So i hope Capcom will do something quickly for..it's not normal at all that some people have these freezes and crashs...not having to lock their fps for aovid issues....or pray for not having crash in some..scénarios.. (totally random..no matter the moment it occursd..it can happen boom just like that without warning.)

The thing it's piss me off specially for being able to succeed the S+ rank for Hardcore....and of course for the weapons.

Nothing at all....
So i installed back the newest version 418.91.

Then i set all graphic options to off or lowest as you can set.
After that the boss triggered. So i tested one option after another (yeah thank You capcom for so many of them)- to test which is messing the game up. And finally....!!!
Option "Texture Quality" if i set it more then "low 0%" it will not trigger the boss.
I can have all other options on max hq etc.. but if i just make "Texture Quality" just a big higher to low 0.5 gb... then the boss will not trigger.

Capcom fix Your stuff! please!!! You can run v-pc`s and test many configurations.. to check out what the hell is not working.... thank You...?!?!
Dont test Your games on users!!! this is very bad - will never again buy you product on launch... never. Usually you should pay for testing isn't it?

No i haven't had this problem depsite my game was running maxxed out with textures quality in High 8go vram (the maximum..)

All boss have been triggered for sure..

So sorry but it's not that who is tied to...

I really start to think that's it depend really on the people each configuraiton or other différences..By example me i am obliged to set my framerate in 60Hz/60 fps and V-synch and Fixed fps not Variable if i doesn't want some random freezes and crash of course of the game (return to the desktop without further explanation...)

But i garee it's REALLY TIME that Cacom made a BIG patch for the game correct specially the freezes/crash random of the game..

Edit6: switching to DX11 seems to have fixed my issue, though I'm still very annoyed.

Edit5: here's a poorly recorded video, sorry about that, from the point I load the game until the crash:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1llOE4XL8rPa8LL5pNydJK503F_AC1-gm/view?usp=drivesdk

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit4: Verifying game files didn't solve anything, the video is taking too long so here's a picture of the spot where the crash happens:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v2ybB5wcGkCsQFH1EJLr004b321OZqw5/view?usp=drivesdk

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit3: I updated to Adrenalin 19.1.1 with more information below. Game still crashed on the same spot, but I messed up the recording, will try again to record the exact spot and then verify game cache, as soon as that happens will update this yet again.

Edit2: Will try updating my drivers and see if that fixes it, I will edit this post when I find out.
I'l also try recording it so it's easier to tell where the crash is hapenning, and include a picture of all the settings I'm using.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: Just crashed again at the exact same spot, although this time Leon had finished calling for Marvin and was already done saying "Dammit!" and I noticed there was also the sound of the fire alarm, which was probably there before and I just didn't remember it, I think going up the stairs in that situation is what's causing the crash since it was in the exact same spot as before.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was playing Leon for the first time on hardcore, and after meeting Claire for the first time at the Police Station I tried going up the stairs where I had come from, Leon was calling for Marvin on the Radio and when I finished climbing the first set of stairs, before reaching the floor where the helicopter crashed but still on the stair the game froze, Leon finished calling for Marvin but his dialogue didn't move forward, I could still hear the rain and fire sound effects, but nothing besides that.

I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt +Del, Ctrl + Shift + Esc and Alt+ F4.
None of these worked so I held down my PC's power button, turned it back on and here I am, typing this.
Don't know if it will happen again, if it does I will edit this post, I lost some progress due to Hardcore and how it's saves work, so it take a bit of time before I edit this xD

My issue as many other people is stuttering, whenever I put the texture setting as something above "low" the game starts stuttering when loading area's textures, nothing i've tried worked even with lowest settings and resolution possible.

Found another thing to get rid of.
If the game is stuttering / frezing the reason is windows media foundation.
Solution:
Disable this with: https://www.codecguide.com/windows7_preferred_filter_tweaker.htm
I did this:
This tool can disable the use of Media Foundation for the following file extensions:
.3g2, .3gp, .3gp2, .3gpp, .avi, .m4a, .m4v, .mov, .mp4, .mp4v, .wav
And now i can have better quality textures enabled and the boss is also triggering.
No:
stuttering
frozen crashes
no loading problems
All relates to codecs...
And this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546
is not fixing anything.

I have one issue, you know how the default running button is "shift" and the default inventory button is "tab"?
Well it basically the same as steam menu that can be accessed in game.

Now the real issue is, for some reason when I access the steam menu in the game.. my keyboard no longer works for the game, it works fine doing other task such as forced closing the game such as via "alt+f4" but again, it just no longer works for the game.. I can't move the character, I can't open inventory menu, nor can I pause the game.

TL;DR
There's an issue when I open steam menu in the game.

Still the same, can we get any update, if this will ever be fixed?

I have a Windows 10 with all the updates installed.
-Tried to re-install the video card drivers.
-Tried to add the game folder to the Kaspersky exception list
-Tried hitting Alt+Enter at start

Here is the error I am getting:
C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Resident Evil 2 Biohazard RE2\re2.exe "d:\\reengine\\reengine\\gitroot\\runtime\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevicedx11.cpp" 5627 createComputeShader failed. HRESULT=0x80070057, The paramenter is incorrect.

ok back in the game, if you got the random black texture screen (still see your map, and inventory and marker items)

go to steam, steam apps, common, resident evil 2 biohasard re2
open the re2_config
go to the line :

UseVendorExtention=Enable

and change for this :

UseVendorExtention=Disable

try to play now !

this is from :

Much thanks to Steam user: Venom Snake for the following FIX!

Go to the RE2 trial version of the folder to find this file re2_config.ini

change this setting to the following: UseVendorExtention=Disable

Now RPD comp should be fine!

Serious Game Breaking Issues!

Firstly i love this game but i have had a few problems since day one. Some minor some game breaking and rage ready. Here are a few problems i have had since i bought this game, Nvidia drivers are updated i am using the GTX 1060 6GB with AMD Ryzen 1700 all steam and Windows 10 updates are installed.

(1) ( Game crashes ) ! I have had a error code a few times and booted to the desktop all steam files where validated mostly happens when using steam overlay with Internet explorer.

(2) (Keyboard issues. ) ? Sometimes the keyboard just stops working altogether with only the mouse working i unplugged it and nothing changed this is a rare problem but always happens when i have not saved in while i can hear the stickkey sound when i press any key on the keyboard.

(3) ( Sound Issues ) Sometimes i lose FX sound for example when i click in the main menu there is missing sound usually after a crash. I have to restart the computer to fix it .

(4) (Steam overlay problems with Internet browsing ) i can not use the internet while playing this game. i have wrote all the puzzle and combinations on a piece of paper :D

(5) ( Steam issues ) Most times when i quit the game Steam hangs and then crashes i have to restart steam

( Weird issue ) Doors where opening the wrong way ' all of them i found this one quite funny it never came back after i restarted the game :-/

Has anyone else had any of these issues i have Emailed Capcom's support page for a reply

Thanks

Joe
