USB's in 1998?
Since when
They came out 2000 and even then it was like high end tech (128MB Flash Drives anyone)
Not 1998

Gonna have a fun little necro here and say that reading this thread almost a year later, the much more concerning issue is all the, I assume at least, 12-year-olds in this thread assuming "USB" just means "USB drive" or "USB dongle," and Googling "when USB was invented."

USB is the port/connector, not the drive/dongle itself, for anyone else stumbling upon this thread in the future. You don't plug in a "USB," you plug in a USB drive, or dongle, or whatever else you might have.

Aside from that, very predictable thread with morons chiming in on how you should never think about or have discussions about anachronisms in games because then you're "not fun at parties," repeating that ancient ass line definitely means you're gonna be the party window licker, so there's that at least.

Remember folks, having a fun laugh and chat about weird, out-of-place stuff in games is fine. You don't have to be the party pooper and tell everyone to turn off their brains just because you never turned yours on.

Windows 95 OSR2 (mainly 2.1) had USB support back in '97. Everyone seems to think it's a flash drive, but it clearly says it's a USB Dongle (Dongles prior to USB were usually serial port passthroughs). Dongles are copy protection devices and are just used to confirm the user's right to run software (a modern equivalent would be an iLok).

So unless I'm going mad too, I fail to see how it's such a huge mistake, compared to some of the other things mentioned.

Just change the USB connector to serial connector, it's already called a dongle.
You're complaining about a USB when Ada uses a device that hacks stuff? Right......

The game has tons of anachronisms in it. REmake 1 had LCD monitors. REmake 2 has them as well. And, RE2 has full 60 fps flawless 4:3 video from a security camera.
LCD is a thing since the 80s. wristwatches and portable ibm compatibles used them alreadly.

Just how much money did the city waste on insane projects, in the end? The S.T.A.R.S themselves was literally just a pet project on a whim, and the R.P.D is full of expensive art, one of a kind giant rubies, and an in-house taxidermy private suite.
That's mainly because the RPD was originally a museum turned into a police station.

This!

It's not Umbrella though it's in the RPD. They just goofed. Now it's canon in the RE verse they invented USB's earlier lol.

It's not RPD, it's STARS. SPOILERS: STARS was funded and armed by Umbrella, in hopes that they could help keep Umbrella's interests in Raccoon City safe. Wesker, the leader of STARS, was secretly a hireranking Umbrella employee and one of their early genetic warfare experiments. So, if Umbrella invented USB drives, it stands to reason that STARS would get them too.

This. It's basically a dongle. Which have been around since the 1980s to protect access to sensitive programs or computer access. The connector being USB might be weird/unusual in 1998 (but possible, as others have pointed out), but the idea of plugging in a dongle to access a program was SUPER COMMON copy and access protection in 1998.

This. As I said before, It's entirely possible for it to be a USB dongle (though it would have to be pretty newly installed), but dongles were (and still are in some circles, I have two different dongles in the back of my music rig - an iLok and an eLicenser) pretty common.

Also, for the love of god, please stop calling things "USB's". /pet_peeve. USB is the connector/standard (Universal Serial Bus), not any specific device, which would be referred to as a USB Device or USB <Type of Device> (such as USB Flash Drive). /rant_over :p.

1996. The police, along with S.T.A.R.S aren't consumers. Use yer head, OP.

You guys know that this world is not exactly 100% based on reality, right? The world of Resident Evil replaced smartphones with holographic phones in 2012. Right now we are still rather far away from any tech like that.

There's that, but OP is also straight up incorrect.
It's like they can't help it.

RE7 set in 2017 has a professional TV crew sporting VHS equipment.

REmake2 set in 1998 has USB authentication dongles.

Not sure which is worse for accuracy.

Anyway, we didn't have consumer grade USB flash drives like today back then, BUT we did have USB peripherals. Probably not used as a security mechanism for a gun rack in a police station, though.
But still, USB ports did exist.
