What background you prefer (Sci Fi, Real, Fantasy etc.)? Are you okay with mediocore graphic, because the mechanics are the most important thing for you? What about Deckbuilding games, because they are able to Hit the Sweet-Spot.
There are obvisious recommendations like the Xcom Titles or Xenonauts, which Hits the same background with a more old-school mechanical feeling.
Spellforce: Conquest of Eo is a nice game, if you like the way the Devs have build the mechanics. A really big one is Age of Wonders 4, which is a huge Sandbox for building your own race/faction, which exactly fits your playstyle.
One of my most anticipated games is Stoneshard. There is a Freedemo on Steam and it is still in EA Phase but with the last big update it has a lot of content already to play with. But it is more of a RPG TBS to be honest.
Best recommendation i could give you is to take "turnbasedlovers.com" on your favorites. So many Indytitles i have discovered via this side.
Eador: Genesis without the New Horizon mod is better. You don't see actors Jim Carrey and Sean Connery as heroes. There are fewer, but better defined units, not some minor variants with +1 this -1 that stat and recolored skin.
Here are my recommendations:
Clash II
Kings Bounty series
Eador: Genesis
Disciples series
The Dragoness: Command of the Flame
Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars
Stones Keeper
Best wishes
seems like you didnt play the new horizon mod. there are 0 reskins or recolored units. also the famous people portraits are disabled by default. there is 0 reason not to play with the new horizon mod. its like hota for heroes3.

Well, the OP mentioned 3 games:
- Songs of Conquest (obviously)
- Pennon and Battle
- Heroes of Might and Magic: Old Era
These 3 games are very similar in almost every aspect:
a) Free turn based World exploration (with mines, treasures, monsters, castles, etc)
b) Turn based Battles on a chess-board-like map
c) Very low complexity (not like 4X games or RPGs)
Definitely the exact same experience you will get with these games:
1.) Clash II (my greatest recommendation)
2.) Heroes of M+M series
3.) Kings Bounty series
4.) Disciples series
5.) Eador: Genesis
6.) The Dragoness: Command of the Flame
There are lots of other games, but they mostly defer in either a) or b) or c).
Best wishes.
Age of Wonders hasn't been mentioned yet!
Age of Wonders 1 has a lot of charm, music and painted unit portraits. It's more similar to Warlords.
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the best version of AoW2.
Age of Wonders 3 has an interesting system where you mix a race with the class of your ruler. For example you can choose an Archdruid and Goblins, and you'll get both regular goblin units as well as religious themed units like goblin martyrs. Or you could choose a Wizard and Orcs and roleplay Saruman or Sauron. Your orcs will have a knack for casting spells.
Age of Wonders 4 - I haven't played this, but it's more similar to 4X games. Less emphasis on battles and exploration, more on empire building and upgrades.
also as mentioned earlier heroes hours is a pretty good single player only game in the same vien as HoMM or SoC. I play that one every now and again. Think something like HoMM 3 or SoC has more to it than heroes hour but its still a good one thats very affordable.
Another good one is songs of silence. Its basically a HoMM like but the big difference in that game is that battles are auto battles and you play special power cards to influence said battles during them. Which i know can be either a hit or miss depending on who you are and what you like in games like this but i personally enojy it. The campaign is pretty solid as well as the progression system and skirmishes are a fun little time waster.
My only complaints with songs of silence is its can be kind of easy depending, to either steamroll other factions in skirmish or get steamrolled depending on the map and some rng.
In something like HoMM or SoC factions tend to exist a lot longer while in songs of silence they other players can get wiped pretty fast. If you play a full 6 player game in songs of silence chances are 2 to 3 of the 6 factions will be defated by someone else before turn ten.
On the flip side it makes games a lot faster to play and easier to get in, in a single session. Also the skirmish maps can feel a tad too small. but i mean even with those small flaws i really quite enjoy songs of silence.
So you definitely have some options.
