There have been a lot of instances where highly trusted individuals have, as you said, spend large masses of time gaining that trust, then turning around and dropping it all for their own self gain. There have been megacoorps who's alliance leader has turned around, stolen titans, yards of super capitals, and hundreds of billions of isk right out from the entire alliance, and then disappeared. How was this handled? A headline story in the eve news.
Your only defense is yourself and your awareness that this is a norm and a reality.

Indeed Chribba, the only man you can trust.
obviously you know nothing about Chribba. a little bit of investigation into eve will prove what has been said about him.
apart from that, as a semi-retired eve player (started playing in 2008 iirc) i would say that the only other people i would trust in eve are those players i know personaly, so if they backstab me i can punch them in the face :)
But, seriously, Chribs is awesome.
Also, Jita is the Tavern on Tatooine....wretched people every where!

If you use an ISK doubler you deserve to be scammed, If you see a plex contract for 400 million read the contract or your gonna loose your money.Margin scam victims should learn about the markets before falling victim to it. It's all there in front of you, Read it very carefully.
1) "I'll help you move your stuff". There is a safe way to have a stranger move your stuff with a properly set courrier contract, where you get the collateral money back if he steals your stuff. In all other instances you TRUST the person to give you back your things.
2) Joining corps. Corpmates are constantly flagged for eachother. Your corpmates can kill your ship in highsec and Concord won't interfear. It's rare but not unheard of for a person to join a corp and get killed, though usually that involves a particulardly expencive ship so new players are pretty safe from that. That also applies if you started a corp and invite someone in.
3) If you're gonna use contracts learn to read them. Next time you're in a market hub and see people spamming local with contracts click on them taking care NOT to ACCEPT them. 99% of those contracts are scams.
-One will have the money in the "you will pay" field rather than "you will get", so you pay money AND the item.
-Another will have the item listed in the cost, so you'll have a contract where you buy a PLEX for 300mil AND a PLEX.
-Another will claim to be a Navy Issue Raven for 400 mil, but it will contain the much cheaper normal raven, but NAMED "Navy Issue Raven". Show info on the item will reveal the scam.
Make a point to recognise how people scam with contracts, so you know what to look for.
The thing is, at some point you'll HAVE to trust someone, the game is desinged to require it. You can't be without a corp, you will eventually ask someone to move your stuff, and nullsec and wormhole play is impossible without putting your stuff on POS storage arrays where everyone has access. Use your head, and just don't put all your eggs in one basket.
