No Maps. Why?
you can see a nice 3d map inside the scanner room. you have a chip implant to see what direction a scanned item is. Why can't you see the 3D map using the chip implant?

It seems like there was a decision to NOT have a map (which just makes players google for maps outside of the game). I'm curious what the reason was. were they trying to create a sense of being lost?

The first game had no map. They want you to have a sense of being lost and having to use beacons.

You have a terrain map on your seaglide that you turn on and off with F.

I can undestand the reasoning, sort of, but ingame it just feels like a very artificial limitation. Letting the player construct a map as they explore areas would be a very welcome feature (and let us add notes to it!). Make it some work, e.g. by making you use something like the seaglide terrain scanner to map out areas. Wouldn't need to show you where you are on the map, but maybe make stuff like beacons show up.

If you want to 'construct' a map, I can recommend a pencil and a sheet of paper. :P

Personally, I like that there's no map. And, of course, If there was a map, I'd use it. Which would make the game less fun in my opinion.

i guess some of us don't really get the "immersion" feel by not having a map. if this was a 1800s period piece, maybe pencil and paper but there's actually a chip implant that relays the scanner room's awesome 3D map so .. i'm leaning more toward unnecessary restriction that takes away from enjoying the game.

I suspect because it would make th3e game too easy. there is a nexus mod that does mapping, the entire bouy system is oriented around lack of maps. I generally spend the early part of the game laying bouys specifically so they can be used for orientation. The practice of using a map btw? called 'orienteering" the compas is critical. I consider the game an orienteering game.

I like that. exploring wrecks really messes with your orientation. that feeling of frantically wondering where you are as you slowly run out of air.

original subnautica was liek this too. though there may have been a mapping thing added just before release. Lack of map is the defining feature of this game surrently. it affects everything. a map would drastically change the game. it should be added immediately or not at all imho

Since downloading and installing the Map mod takes about 2 minutes I'm guessing it's "not at all".

People who want a map can add it themselves with about six clicks of the mouse.

Real subnauticans don’t use maps

They use their memory and skills to find their way

This is actually a good point. Gameplaywise it is a good thing, I think, but storywise it is a bit forced. In the first game this was justified by it being an unexplored planet and by the fact all your stuff was damaged. Here it makes less narrative sense. If nothing else, they perhaps should come up with a plausible scenario/justification for why this is as it is.

wow. Nazis play a stoner game like subnautica too. lmao.

if there's a mod for something, that means the game lacks something that players want and use. which is easier; 1) install a map mod or 2) for "real subnauticans" to just not use the map like some survivalist starting a fire with sticks next to a 7-11 (cause that's what real men do, right?).

Map isn't gonna take away anything but it will add greater feel of the world we explore.

map mod is on nexus, havent tested it for this game yet. but it was wonderful in part 1

The game lacks a feature that only some players want.

I would say its easier for you personally to get a mod then for the developers to add one to the base game.
