It makes no sense!
Why do we have to rebuy things that we found/were given during the course of missions? Dude gives me a police box and come to find out it's 19k or something ridiculous. Like, I get that it can't be without repercussions or nobody would buy anything decor-related, so maybe displaying certain items (especially ones you... acquired...) could add heat or something?

Right now it's like "Ah, yes, everything we obtained during this mission is going directly into the cult pawn shop, and we can't have it."

I agree, hopefully they will change that in the future, even if they then make them rarer as a result.

I agree it's a bit daft that you don't find the item, you just find the equivalent of an ebay link to buy it.

Here's another problem... Why can't we sell objects after buying them? Why am I forced to trash something instead of getting a fraction of its original cost? Or even a full refund if I haven't unpaused the game yet? If I build a room, then decided to remove it, I shouldn't have to destroying everything inside it and get nothing back. If I need to remodel part of the base, I instead need to built temporary rooms just to hold those items, because apparently my cult leader will not allow anything to be sold.

There is an unlockable tech in the Divine Inspirations on the Futurism tree which once unlocked, does refund 20% of the item cost.

Though by the time we get to the Divine Inspirations stage of the game, we barely need the extra funds anymore.

It would be super cool if you could have a 'Divine Relics' Room, where you literally convince your followers that whatever is in that room has been touched by your deity, and therefore they will give you money for it. It can be a slower process, (even divine poop buckets aren't exactly all that enticing) but could be a cool mechanic that allows you to sell unused items.

I agree that the way the game handles items being deleted and upgraded needs to be re-worked. Either a full refund, or a decreasing percentage of value based on how old the item is. For example; if the item is ten days old, then take off 10% and refund 90%. Like 1% per day or something along those lines. To give another example: the cost of upgrading to the top "gold" toilets should take into account the quality and age of the toilet being replaced. Maybe a better solution would be a proper "upgrade" option.

That's interesting feedback, I will pass it onto the devs for you

We seem to have drifted way off the original topic: why are the items we find in missions not physical objects we have stolen/acquired/been given but just things we have to pay for?

It makes no sense when the quest result say we obtained or were given an object. If we have to pay, the quest should be rephrased into somebody offering to give us the object if we pay them money.

We get a link to the hidden listing for the item, haha

Especially since it generally implies that they're actually going to the place where the item would be found.

It would be different if the game made it so that they're actually going around finding fences and black market contacts, or whatever

Still a thing, devs, please look into this. Why do I need to pay people money for objects like in some of the mission encounters and then it costs thousands to actually place the item? Also at least give back a bit of the money spent on items because it's really annoying if you clicked wrong a single time and then have to trash an object that costs several thousand....
