A game with great potential, but
so many things are done wrong in this game.

Firstly, it is not a rogue-lite game, there is little "random" factors in this game.
It is a grind fest, meaning you need to grind endlessly for better equipment so you stand a chance to beat some levels.
Balance is horrendous, a shot-gun lose close-range to anything including machine gun and rocket launcher,
so why I should pick a weapon that is weaker, with less range and flres slowly?

The game itself is really not that hard for the most part, they make it hard by spawning ambushes too often so that when you make mistakes, you lose. They just cannot tell the difference between tedious and hard.

Also, enemies can actually spawn right on top of you without any warning.

Bugs Must Die. A remarkable indie game has been released! It is a modern-style classic arcade game with attractions that make the player quite excited. Frankly, most players will be surprised at its game quality beyond expectations. It's a top-down shooter gameplay featuring a brilliant Bullet Hell. It contains a hommage for classic arcade game culture too.

The basic story plot is ready, but the key to this game is the gameplay. A basic tutorial is available, which will be a tip for your future challenges in this game. 3 playable vehicles are available, each with unique features. You can upgrade your equipment with coins obtained through each stage. Each level is fixed in large parts, but every new game has a slight change in terrain, so this game has some similar aspects to roguelite. In addition, there are lots of Easter eggs & hidden bosses in this game. You can see that this developer put a lot of effort into the details in this game. The game experience it offers is very good! With personal hope, if the online multiplayer can be supported in this game, it will be really fantastic.

Bugs Must Die. It's a stunning game full of respect for classical arcades. Gameplay is very addictive. In particular, defeating hidden bosses is quite challenging. So its replay value is very high. Some grinding process is required, but it is not a big problem. To be honest, this game has a better quality than expected. It is definitely a hidden gem. Hope more players to discover the fun of this game. Highly Recommend!

I played already the demo a bit. This is indeed a very good twin-stick, top-down shooter. With a lots of different weapons and equipment. Good old-school graphics. You can see that developers put some blood into the game. Well done.

The controls might be a bit difficult and confusing in the beginning, but you will get used to it. I will definitely come back to the game and play it some more.

Prepare yourself . . . insects are taking over the galaxy. You are being sent in deep behind enemy lines. It could be a suicide mission; the forces you are up against are strong and well-armed. You also are heavily armed, with your armored vehicle, a broad array of weapons, perks, and support items to bring your own hell to this place. Choose your vehicle carefully; there are 3 to choose from at the start (with 2 more unlockable), their stats are all very different and not upgradable. You will start with basic armaments, upgrading as you go with money you collect from fallen enemies. You can upgrade your weapons and sub-weapons as you unlock them, along with unlocking additional melee, drone, and air support items. Don't forget to invest in yourself as well. Health upgrades and additional drone support can mean the difference between beating a level or getting annihilated.

Released & self-published on Apr 5, 2019, by the developer DG Games Workshop, this is their first release on Steam. It is a Difficult, Top-Down, Pixel Graphic, Bullet Hell with an old school flavor reminiscent of the 80s & 90s arcade games. It does feature partial controller support. I tested my Xbox 360 controller without issue. You can also customize your binding as needed. It contains 15 levels of ever-changing, intense battles against an insect army. Each level has its own deadly boss to fight to advance to the next level. Once you beat it on normal difficulty, there are 2 additional hardcore modes to lay waste to your will to game. There are not a lot of settings; music and sound volumes, resolution, fullscreen or windowed, camera height (this zooms out the map more), there is also joystick auto-aiming and language selector. With tons of weapons and power-ups to aid you, it will still be the fight of your life. They even added the ability to skip a few of the levels using some of your gold coins should you get stuck. This will allow you to keep playing and gaining more money to upgrade and return to the stage later when you may be more powerful.

Quite an impressive title for their first release. It has a lively pixel art style with energetic gameplay. A nice old-school score and sound effects; both are well done and fit the game perfectly. With massive numbers of bullets, missiles and bombs flying at you and being fired by you, it holds true to being a Bullet Hell from start to finish. It is very challenging, and I would not rate it as casual. I am rating it as difficult; it does have hard-core gameplay also after you beat the normal mode. There was a Demo available, but it was removed as the developer felt it was out of date with the Steam release. I would recommend they reinstate a demo to allow people a chance to see if the game fits their play styles, as it is a very good game, but very difficult. There are no save points during the stages - get defeated and its restart the level! I would have liked to see at least a midway save point, as the bosses are really tough sometimes, and the levels are not really all that short. You do get to grind for more cash this way, though, to get more upgrades. I have done a fair amount of grinding to get upgrades myself, to be a lean mean bug-killing machine! Personally, I feel the bosses could be balanced out a little more; the main game itself is a lot of fun and challenging getting through, but the bosses are very challenging. More often than not, you make a mistake and it’s get wrecked, then start the stage over. I can only imagine what it will be like in the 2 hardcore modes.

We start out our gameplay in a tutorial level to teach us the basic mechanics of the game. There are three levels in total that will lead you through to the advanced mechanics prior to starting the first level. Each level is not only different in style and layout, but enemies, bosses, and the necessary actions to complete it changes with every stage. As you progress through the stages you will want to purchase additional slots and power-ups for your vehicle and yourself. Getting the right combination to fight a particular area can be fun and challenging to figure out which combinations work best. With a large arsenal at your disposal, there is plenty of pain to rain down on your enemy. I really liked the fact that they included an additional view with the high camera view. It allows you to see most of the map compared the small area you see if you do not use it. The ultimate power you have is pretty epic too. I didn't realize I had it at first, I mistook its indicator for something else. Lucky for me, my son noticed, and we figured out I had additional firepower to kick some insect booty with. The mechanics in general were a riot, and I enjoyed discovering them as I played and discovered that they constantly changed, keeping every stage fresh and interesting. As usual, I will leave these for you to discover on your own. I didn't discover any bugs, besides the ones I was predestined to slay during my gameplay.

Bugs Must Die is a bullet-hell arcade with a lot of content and several playable vehicles. It has 2 different modes that provide several hours of gameplay, although I don't see myself playing the whole thing (see the cons below). The levels in the story mode have a good variety when it comes to objectives and environments. For example, some stages require you to fight a boss or to survive several waves, while other stages actually have 10 to 20 minutes of exploration. By far the best part of the game is the amount of active abilities. It has a huge variety of sub-weapons and primary weapons, including additional abilities like a super attack, weapon modifiers and a 'melee' skill. There are 4 types of currency that can be used to upgrade weapons and your vehicle. You can improve weapon stats such as attack speed, damage and ammo. While the game has some spamming problems, the art style is very enjoyable, reminds me of classic Genesis games. Not to mention that soundtrack is pretty good, although it lacks an impact sound which could be useful for enemies that you fight off-screen.

- I do not like the off-screen fighting that often takes place in this game. There are many turrets that shoot a lot of bullets from 1 or 3 screen away. You can partially mitigate that by moving around blocks and using them as shields, but generally speaking you often fighting enemies that you can't see (and sometimes your gun can't shoot far enough). The game also needs a sound effect when you hit buildings.

- While I can't blame a bullet-hell game for having bullets, I do think that visuals in this game are not very refined and make it hard to see. Sometimes 70% of the screen is covered with effects that tend to blind me. Also, some of the enemies have poorly balanced attacks, jumping on top of you and just spraying you with bullets, making it pretty hard to react to animation.

Overall Thoughts: 7/10

I was hoping for a more polished experience considering that bullet-hell games usually do not cost $12 , but overall it has more positives than negatives. It definitely has plenty of content if you can overlook its relatively small problems.

The game runs flawlessly and with responsive fluid controls and makes this game just a joy to play. The controls and movement in this game are so good in fact that I'd say that the controls and smooth gameplay is even better than much more popular indie games like "Binding of Isaac". ..Yes, this game REALLY IS THAT GOOD!

A jaw dropping awesome first title on Steam for sure and I pat your back and tell you "Well done!" ...Triple A developers and companies could learn a LOT from you and your first indie game here with "Bugs Must Die"..No lie!

I played/streamed the demo of this game. Later, upon release, I purchased the full version, given how much fun I had in the demo. Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
- Fun gameplay. Reminds old school (seasoned) gamers of the arcade days of yesteryear.
- Awesome top down graphics. Colorful sprites and satisfying explosions after pulling off special attacks, melee moves and General tank shooting
- Challenging difficultly. Once again, for those that enjoyed the tough games of the retro age, this is a game you’ll enjoy.
- Soundtrack. The soundtrack fits each level and boss battle in the game. From upbeat and encouraging to brooding and cautious.
- Upgrade systems. Upgrade all kinds of weapons, the damage %, capacity, customize load outs per vehicle used (up to three different variations) and continue to improve yourself as the levels become more and more challenging.
- Tutorial. I’m putting this here because some game tutorials tend to lack some vital info, having you smash different buttons in order to reach that “so that’s how you do it!” moment. The tutorial in the game is simple, straightforward and easy to grasp.
- Aiming. Whether you’re looking to take out an alien bug, a turret atop an enemy base or enemies over a wall, there’s never an issue hitting your mark.

Cons:
-The difficulty. Although I enjoyed the in your face challenge (aka the Cuphead difficulty), some may find themselves repeating levels minutes after they load in. There are options to take the Easy route over the Hard one.

This game is definitely worth a purchase, especially if you’re nostalgic of games like Galaga or a fan of shooters and boss battles.

Very fun and deep old style arcade twin stick shooter. It also has a grind loop that makes you feel like your progressing nicely. Most twin sticks are for a short term play experience, this one is a much longer and deeper haul. It's Total Carnage with a helping of Diablo and Gunbird 2. Very fun if you like these style of games. A progression Twin Sticker. Don't think I've played anything quite like it.

I'm going to keep this short, because I'm keen to play more of this, but yes, fun indeed. Enemy AI > NEEDS < work though, as the enemies will often get stuck at obstacles. So to the developers, program the enemies to maneuver better, and you'd have a 9/10 from me. But for now? 7.8/10. Glad I got it... Back to it now...
