Update: If you use this method, after your save is mentioned to be corrupted and gets deleted by the game, don't forget to turn on the cloud again when you create a new one otherwise you may find that the next time you boot up the game, your next progress would be lost as it's also known to be "corrupted"....yes, I lost all my work, all that grinding, rip.

If it's seasonal, then I'm getting the suspicion that DLC characters will be decided based on which team is more popular among the players.
@GrandMajora the teams are made up of a mixture of characters from the different mangas, I would guess since they gave a number they have already decided which characters they're adding
Seems unlikely. They've probably already decided which characters will be DLC and are working on them.
This kind of faction system isn't really a new thing. MK X had it, For Honor had it, the only difference is with MK X you could change factions at any point; so people would just flock to the winning one.
Finding out any concrete proof one way or the other has proven frustrating, since none of the early access players are demonstrating the game's extra mechanics in their videos. They're just trying to rush through the story as quickly as possible.
I'm watching one play through who's spent the last 5 hours or so using the same Abilities since they started the game, and they're just spamming Sand Tsunami and Kamehameha over and over again. They haven't even tried testing out other moves, upgrading their skills, or customizing their element.
In other words, their videos are BORING. But they seem to have gotten the furthest into the game so far, so I keep watching.
At this point there isn't a way to change and keep your progress. But a solution was posted in this thread if you want to delete your save and pick a different team for cosmetic reasons.
Keep in mind you will likely be able to change team later when the event ends, according to the ingame tips.
