Even if I prefer Dark Souls, I still have a loooot of fun with Sekiro, parrying feels so great
Sekiro is just a game. It's DESIGNED to be beaten. If you calm yourself down, pay attention to the enemies' body movements and just think through each action you should be fine. Heck, even the deflection window is way larger than the dodge window for Souls, BB and ER. And on any normal first run you have a 0-chip block to catch most of the deflections to mistime.
Oh and you just said “optional attack button” so I already know you're doing something wrong. You might not remember this, but the game literally tells you that "a combination of attack and defense" as well as "lowering vitality" are the keys to breaking an enemy's posture. Not just spamming "parry" which is not even a mechanic in this game, and the devs even made the effort of naming it something else so people would understand it was not meant to work as a Souls parry, but Souls fans be stubborn creatures indeed, for good and for bad.
If you want to get better at Sekiro, stop playing any other game while Sekiro is running on your screen. Learn it as something new. Pretend that Souls doesn't exist, From Software hasn't made any other game you've played. Nothing will trip you up more in ANY game than stubbornly trying to play it as something else. Humble yourself down and learn it from scratch every time you play. Open your ears wide, listen and react to the beat. And the most important tip, rest up. If you're feeling too upset, frustrated, etc. just stop, sleep on it and come back. This entire forum is my backing evidence for dozens of people who made threads asking for help only to close the thread themselves, the very next day, when they surpassed their wall simply by coming back after a good night of sleep.
The rager in this thread disagreed. I don't have much feeling about parrying as I do just killing a boss that gave me trouble. I'm still in the early game so they give me bosses with few attack patterns, so it's just learning the timing for parry and what to do some unique dodge/mikuri counter.
I also got in the game after the third try, and I'm having a blast so far... The first and second time I managed to get to Lady Butterfly, but I couldn't beat her. This time, I managed to kill her and the next two bosses, it's a really great game!
If the game ever tries to teach you something new, actually try to learn it because it will be useful
You should be weaving attacks, prosthetics and special moves when possible in between deflect strings
Every boss has an opening after deflecting a string of attacks, the windows vary in length but once you learn them don't hesitate
Also some enemies are weaker to different prosthetics (try hitting an airborne enemy with a shuriken)
No dude. People who beat Sekiro are better at the game than those who quit Sekiro. That is all.
No, have you played lies of p?
No mikiri counter, no lightning reversals,
No sweep counter, nothing, parry all to win
That is true parry sim.
Not sekiro
You really have to learn and normalize the entire kit. Some skills are bread and butter, but some skills are niche but extremely useful when the situation arises.
I just beat the headless monkey, round 2 fight with the other monkey (I've been passed that and cleared out the mist dude and a bunch of minibosses).
I feel like even those the main game is tough. Since Sekiro doesn't really get a new moveset and enemies fall into deliberate patterns, sometimes it's actually quite easy to exploit AI or beat them by playing patiently (or aggressively if you really know the patterns).
I dislike the enemies that you have to use divine confetti on (or fight for an eternity). I would have rather some mechanic that you have to do some bed of chaos side quest to unlock the ability to harm each one. Nothing wrong with the item, but they are limited and it can be pretty annoying if you are low on them.
I'm not sure how far I am in the game, but this game seems to progress faster than DS though I was mad lost in this game.
Divine confetti can be farmed from 1 place early game and late game they are more plentiful.
As someone who mastered this game to a degree that i can beat bosses charmless with one hand, I hold the opinion anyone can do that. If i can, so can you.
I needed 7 hours to beat the last boss frist time around. The next 7 or so times it was still hard as hell. I got my azz kicked more times than i can count.
It gets easier the longer you play. Patience makes perfect. I just enjoyed this game to a very deep degree and mastering bosses was something that i started enjoying the most in this game. I still have the boss mod installed to replay bosses and minibosses any time.
Dont give up skeleton.
I’m still going for have to disagree (not necessarily about the patience thing). Sekiro requires to player to press more buttons than DS. In sekiro, you have to block/parry, you have to attack, you have to jump, you have to use items for certain bosses, you have a flexibility alternative skill that you can use, and you can’t outlevel enemies. DS games can be beaten with two buttons, attack or magic and dodge. Being able to level up and reduce the efficacy of the enemy you’re having trouble and load in multiplayer for a carry both of those make for an easier experience. Having played both games (I’m at Owl on sekiro), I can say in full confidence that this game requires more skill. I like DS more, but it’s an objectively easier game due to the listed factors.
But if you can beat DS, chances are big there is nothing holding you back from beating sekiro. Nothing but your own lack of confidence 😉
