The reason I said "NO" first is the way you described what you have done IS NOT the actual way the game is designed.
Each skill point requires certain amount of XP, that is to say, after killing enemies and the amount of XP built up has reached the pre-designated amount, you will gain a skill point. However, this does not mean that the amount for the getting the 2nd skill point is the same as the first one. In fact, the amount of XP required will increase as you get to the next one.
Now, once you get a skill point, you will NOT lose any of them even if you die twice. But, ok, let say, you have 4 skill points pius some XP. So, you are in effect on your way to get your 5th skill point. But unfortunately you die twice in a fight against, say, a boss class enemy. In Sekiro, you will have a 30% chance NOT losing any XP nor money. And if you are unlucky enough, you will lose HALF of those XP and HALF of your money.
As regard to your money, there is also a similar process to save guard them, which is those gold bags that you can buy from any of the vendors in the game. The light one has a capacity of 100, i.e. you can save 100 sen in one of these bags but it will cost you 10 sen extra. The large one can hold 500 and will cost you 50 extra. The bulging one can hold 1000 and will cost you 100 extra. I hope I make sense here. To sum up, in order to save 100 sen, you need to spend 110. By selling one of these, you will get 100 back. And similarly true for the other two types of bags.
In your first playthrough, you may find yourself running out of money pretty quickly, due to buying resources, spirit emblems, etc.. So, you will have to farm money and XP. I suggest you do your farming at Hirata Estate as killing an enemy there will almost double the XP and money reward. Yes, it will be boring and slow because in the early stage, your Sekiro will be weak so it is NOT recommended to face them head on, especially when there is more than one around. You will have to plot your path carefully and stealth kill them as many as possible. Afterall, Sekiro is a highly trained shinobi, a ninja and an assassin, not Conan the Barbarian.
Hope this help. Good luck and have fun... :)
I do this all the time just grind some mobs then as soon as you get your skill go fight the boss. Go spend your sens too while you are at it as well.
