My issue with katanas in FromSoftware games (and in Japanese games in general) is that they're always overpowered and some of the strongest weapons. I get it, Japanese developers are really proud of their history, but they love to exaggerate katana's capabilities and cutting power. And the worst of them all is the katana in Sekiro. It seems made of adamantium because it can deflect even bullets without breaking or losing sharpness. Like, come on, Fromsoftware, don't consider your players such idiots. Even worse an offense is enemies kicking Sekiro and him doing nothing. Like, how hard could it be to cut off the damn leg? Even as a fantasy game Dark Souls combat still has some realism to it. Watch HEMA practicioners like Skallagrim reviewing Dark Souls combat, they actually find it quite believable. There's none of that in Sekiro. Everyone can perfectly deflect a shuriken, and every damn low-tier enemy has perfected sworsmanship to godlike levels.
I'm not against katanas per se, but I definitely am against their glorification. Also neither samurais nor shinobi carried katanas as their main weapons, they were sidearms and were used as last resort. Imagine Call of Duty with only a pistol, that's basically Sekiro.
Advice taken.
katanas won on a lot of points. They are just exceptionally well made swords.
As for dark souls...I was under the impression that the entire community regarded katanas as cool looking, but otherwise useless gimmick weapons??
Sekiro is a damn satisfying game though. I'd still go back once in a while just to enjoy the boss fight and combat.
However, sekiro's level design is head and shoulders above DS3's so far (haven't found a case of the demon ruins in sekiro yet. Though a few areas do come close) and most of the bosses I've encountered so far, while tough as nails sometimes, have been good fights. Nice setpieces too, although I feel like the enemies are more dressing/grind fodder in sekiro than in DS, I don't think I've ever had to retread areas in a DS game for the souls, and yet i feel it's gonna take a whole lot of grinding to clear sekiro's vendors.
I mean I like the game and i commend From for doing something different, but I certainly enjoyed DS3 and BB more, obscure quests and weird half finished areas and all.
Seeing as they're very different games, Sekiro is an action game and less of an rpg.
But I do prefer Dark Souls' combat loop and gameplay more.
Jolly Co-operation really makes it fun, and grinding pvp gives a lot more replayability.
Also having a custom character and being able to play with many weapons and armors is what I find enjoyable.
I primarily play Dark Souls for the PVE, but I enjoy the shake-up to the routine that PVP provides. Getting auto-summoned as a Blue Sentinel makes me feel like Mighty Mouse "here I come to save the day!" Getting auto-summoned as a Spear of the Church makes me feel like a total bad-ass when I stomp out 4 players with my guardian assistant... shouldn't have tried to disturb my lady's slumber.
Sekiro is a good game, but I don't like it nearly as much as Dark Souls 3.
DS3 is arguably more replayable than Sekiro because of its equipment system letting you constantly mix up how you fight, but I would argue that Sekiro has more replayability than people give it credit for. It's just that in Sekiro's case, the replayability comes from mastering its brutal combat and each specific boss. One playthrough of Sekiro isn't enough to explore everything the combat has to offer, just like one playthrough of DS3 isn't enough to see every build you can make.
Sekiro wins on the story for me because it's ever-present and is what drives you forward. Dark Souls 3's story also serves as motivation, but it's more background noise than a central plot. I still enjoy it, and the environmental storytelling is fantastic, but I prefer Sekiro's approach of having plenty of Souls-like background lore while also telling an interesting story up-front.
I also personally prefer Sekiro's level design. Dark Souls 3's environments are beautiful, but exploring them is a matter of either trudging down a hallway or bumbling around a massive open area with various enemies dotted around, often in irritating places to surprise or ambush you. Sekiro on the other hand has much more focused areas. The geography is laid out like an obstacle course with enemies in your path and secrets dotted around. And Sekiro's unique movement makes it more satisfying to get around than DS3, where all you can do is run and jump.
Overall, I prefer Sekiro, but I wouldn't say it's better than Dark Souls 3. It just does more things that I resonate with, and I think I prefer its more focused approach on the kind of experience it wants to provide. But both are fantastic games and I love Dark Souls 3 for a massive amount of its own reasons.
Don't get me wrong, DS3 is one of my favorite games of all time. I love the large variety of builds this game offers and at the same time enjoy all epic boss fights and challenges (SL1, no-glitch speedrun).
But I think Sekiro has much more mature combats system. Under a given situation you could dodge, jump, block or attack, vs in DS3 you just roll or attack 95% of the time. Also, Sekiro "DLC" is just rewarding. You could practice difficult bosses over and over again instead of running through a difficult area and just to get one shot mid battle.
But regardless, they are both great games, by far DS3 has the best orchestra (including famous chess king theme), and if you by chance have any friend then it could be your choice ;)
