Question about characters names
Why does Isshin and Genichiro have "Ashina" as a surname? Is it just because they are from that place? And i dont know if they actually are from there since is said that the period the game is set on had lots of battles

Yes, ok. Then why does Isshin has that surname? Because he took that land?

Probably the land is named after their names after they successfully conquered it.

Well, if you have a drink with Isshin, the old scoundrel makes it very clear that they didn't really conquer the land of Ashina in the cinematic at the start of the game.

They always lived there, even in Isshin's youth ( where they were scoundrels and made good sake - he and his Seven Spears, at least that's my understanding ) and probably for generations before. They rebeled and took the land of Ashina back from what I assume is the Interior Ministry which I guess wanted to conquer Ashina to form a bigger state ( japanese history is weird like that, check it out, at some point they moved their capital like a bazillion times just to accomodate for whichever clan won 'this time' - afaik 'Tokyo' literally just translates to 'eastern capital' ). This is called a rebellion on numerous occasions, so it never was a conquest. And so, an Ashina once again ruled over the land of Ashina.

So I guess, and this is really just a guess, that Isshin belongs to the nobles of the land Ashina, and he is named Ashina like his father and their father before them. This is a similar naming practice to middle-european nobility naming laws. For example, the family of Windsor was called 'of Coburg-Sachsen-Gotha', or 'Prince Albert of Monaco'.

He would be 'Isshin of Ashina' in european culture, and Genichiro would be 'Genichiro of Ashina'.

edit: My, Gyoubu says that 'he stood with the Ashina when they took this country' - so I'm not that sure now after all :(

The Ashina owned the land. Isshin talks about how the land was taken, and the Ashina folk were branded heretics and weren't even allowed to drink from the sacred waters of the land, which was their tradition. The rebels, lead by Isshin, took the land back and proceeded to live somewhat peacefully for a while, until the moment you start the game, when the interior ministry is getting ready for their final attack against the Ashina forces.

Genichiro, by the way, is not Isshin's biological grandson. He was adopted by Isshin, and his actions, as well as the desire of the people of Ashina to live independently from the rest of Japan, fulled his resolve to protect the land of Ashina as if it was his own mother.

So the land has their name because they own it since a long time ago basically.

From the Remnant: Genichiro item you get after using his memory:

"Born a peasant, Genichiro Ashina was taken in by the Ashina after his mother's death. With his country on the brink of defeat, Genichiro took to heretical arts and mastered the Lightning of Tomoe. Such heresy may be the key to saving her."

By the way, the "(..,) key to saving her." bit is about Ashina, not his biological mother.

Ok. Its just that it is confusing because when you fight the final boss, Isshin calls Genichiro "grandson". I dont know if its really his grandson or Isshin just calling him that despite Genichiro being adopted

Ashina is the name of their clan.

its common in asian esp chinese and japanese cultures to have the clan name (historically it was clan name, but now its generally just known as a surname) first then the personal name next.

as a side note, the western way of naming: first name, middle name, last name, comes from how romans used to name where the last name was the family/house name.

the land is not "owned" per se, when a group of people usually related by blood or kinship, got together and became powerful in a region of japan or china, they eventually took over the territories they lived on. it became known as "belonging" to their clan.

however, in the old times of japan, some clans would get recognized by the emperor and their claim on the territories would become official.

when the emperor was overthrown in wars etc all bets were off and the new clans would get the land (after killing the people already there or coming to some sort of agreement with them)

anyone could be a part of the clan if they were accepted by the clan (hence why genichiro was adopted and called grandson) even though he wasnt biologically isshin's grandson, he is considered to be a full fledged relative/clan member.

kinda like joining a gang where you go fight with other gangs for territory and control
