Is Genichiro A Legend In Japan?
I was just wondering if Genichiro was a legend over in Japan. I mean I know he was a real dude, but it's like every single game they put him in he is typically one of the harder enemies to face. Like in this game, I think he's my hardest fight so far, as far as genuine bosses go. In Nioh he was arguably my toughest opponent as well.

He's not the same as any of the Nioh foes (who were all based on real people).

While the Ashina clan is real, Genichiro and Isshin were not real people, and none of the Ashina were particularly notable in the Sengoku period, apart from briefly challenging the Date family for control of northern Japan before the Date took their castle.

Ah, then I guess Genichiro is just a name the developers thought was cool?

I'm guessing the name has some kind of meaning when translated to english. Like I'm pretty sure Isshin means something along the lines of "One strike", I know it means one-something

Isshin in kanji is 一心, literal translation is one mind or one heart. it probably means very focue on or devote to something.

Genichiro in kanji is 弦一郎. 弦means bowstring.

You've confused Genichiro with Muneshige in Nioh. They both have similar fight style, use sword and bow and have some sort of lightning attacks. And both of them are adopted in the lore. Maybe Genichiro is inspired by Muneshige.

Ah yeah I think you're right. Ginichiro I think was the name of Muneshige's wife in Nioh.

Ginchiyo, but yes, a similar name.

Ah, yeah. I'm really bad at names. My brother got furious at me one time because I thought Wolverines brother was called "Werewolf" not Sabertooth.

He alawys reminded me of "Tachibana Muneshige", Same style of armor, same kind of weaponry (Sword and Bow) also both are somehow related to lightning. The name could be a reference to his Wife "Ginchiyo Muneshige"

Second thing, his most trusted General "gyobu oniwa" Reminded me strongly at "Honda Tadakatsu", which was a loyal speer whielder and friend of "Tachibana".

So, yeah... i guess he is inspired from him

They both seemed to kind of have the same moveset too. Genichiro in Sekiro leaps up in the air to do a downwards stabbing attack, just like Tachibana in Nioh. They both also do that thing with their bow where they spin in a circle, drop to one knee and fire off a volley. The only difference is in Nioh, Tachibana shoots like three arrows in a spread at you, where as Genichiro fires just a regular volley.

Makes sense since Isshin was the lead figurehead of the rebellion.

Haha, those names are too fitting. Its also the name of Isshin's 1 out of 2 special moves you can get from him, and Genichiro being a bow abuser and all that.

where does handsome take the kanji from?

源一郎 = Genichiro

源 = source
一 = one
郎 = young person, son, husband

so genichiro being the source of a young person...
well, one could see this as a spoiler for the final boss. xD

一心 = Issin

一 = one
心 = heart

especially if you combine it with grandpa, one heart, so both share 1 heart?!^^

btw there are 2 kinda famous genichiros in japan one is a wrestler
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genichiro_Tenryu
the other a writer
