I still think it's stupid there's no option to remove it because once you do know the attacks it would feel a lot more satisfying telling apart different attacks yourself instead of getting a lil warning.
Very late in the game I played around with a mod to remove the sound as well so I basically had to do it purely by reading the enemy, which basically is what I did on fights like Guardian Ape anyway because the boss is so loud I couldn't hear warning sounds anyway.
Because it distracts the player, and sometimes also straight up blocks the enemies movements making it harder to see what they are doing.
If they wanted to help the player, then the audio cue is more then enough. The visual one only distracts.
That's why they don't.
If it wasn't there, more people would complain about the difficulty because they wouldn't know when to dodge, mikiri counter, jump ect.
I am also not distracted by it...
For me noob it is actually like it was intentend to be, so it is... Help!
Now if only mikiri wasn't so unreliable on uneven terrain...
If it doesn't bother you then that's great, I think its understandable if it does though... I mean its not like it's is a big red icon right in the middle of the screen....
When in doubt, spam deflect or jump out lul. And pray.
Radial or grabs can't be blocked.
A big part of the "difficulty" in the game is that most heavy attacks have bad indication and the wrong form of counter (like, jump instead of block/mikiri) are punished hard.
When it comes to Mikiri countering you will often get the timing wrong if you only rely on the Kanji. Personally I've done more bad calls as a result of the Kanji then I would have without it.
Especially against Genjichiro where you only have a very short window to see if he's going for a thrust or sweep. The kanji distracting makes that basically impossible to hit right without lucking into the right move as it hides the start up animation long enough.
I definately agree with the OP that not having the Kanji makes reaction times much faster.
Its not the terrain that's the problem. Problem is that with Mikiri counter, using any other imput near it will prevent the move from activating. Focus only using the dodge key (dodge+forward, since its the same move) staying away from other inputs and you'll get it off a lot more reliably.
Even moving to the side to close to the input for Mikiri Counter will prevent it from activating.
Exact inputs outside of 2D fighting games are kind of a bad idea imo.
