Advanced Genie Editor not working on DE
So I have the Advanced Genie Editor from the AoK Heaven blacksmith in it's own unzipped folder on my desktop but for some reason when I try to run it and open the dat files from either AoEDE or AoE2DE the program simply says unhandled exception and crashes. This does NOT occur with AoKHD or CD version.

If it matters, I have steam installed on a non-default directory: C:\Backup\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\AoE2DE (notice the "Backup") due to a computer error years ago. But again AoKHD works fine.

This sucks because I loved modding a few things with AGE, especially getting rid of those awful dropsites (which can be done)...

The latest version of AGE, compatible with Definitive Edition, actually comes pre-packaged with the game! Check the "Tools_Builds" directory in your AoE2DE directory to find it. 🙂

I found it! But trying to run it with AoE2DE still makes an "Unhandled unknown exception; terminating the program" popup before it crashes :'(

Have you set "Genie version" to "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition" on the main screen?
You will also need to provide the path to the DAT (\resources\_common\dat\empires2_x2_p1.dat), and to the strings file (\resources\en\strings\key-value\key-value-strings-utf8.txt).

Note that SLP (SMX) previewing, as well as playing audio, is currently unsupported for DE.

The "Genie Version" is set to AoE2DE. Drive letter is C, Languange is en, Terrains is 42.
The "Compressed data set" is set to "C:\Backup\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\AoE2DE\resources\_common\dat\empires2_x2_p1.dat" which is where the file is located. I even use browse to select it.
The "Language file location" is "C:\Backup\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\AoE2DE\resources\en\strings\key-value\key-value-strings-utf8.txt"
The "Langage x1 file location" is "C:\Backup\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\AoE2DE\resources\en\strings\key-value\key-value-modded-strings-utf8.txt"
The "Langage p1 file location" is unchecked, as are both the write language boxes below it.
The "Path for DRS files" is "C:\Backup\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\AoE2DE\resources\_common\drs"

Whenever I open the dat file for AoKHD the first thing the program does is create that second window showing the graphics. If that doesn't work for DE then we may have our problem. How do I tell AGE not to attempt making that graphics window?

Okay so it seems to be related to the default number of terrains. Can you try the following:

Edit: Simply disable the "Allow adding terrains" option in the "Options" menu. (see replies below)

  • Run AGE
  • Press Cancel on the "Open files" window
  • Click on "Options" in the top-left, enable "Allow adding terrains"
  • Click "Open" (open gate icon in the top-left) again
  • Input the number of terrains: 200
  • Try loading the DAT with the rest of settings as before.
Also try unchecking the DRS directory.

It may be that the default number of terrains is not set properly. I will forward this to the AGE developer, thank you!

Dude! I love you! (No creepy.) It worked! Is 42 the number for AoKHD and thats the number I need if I ever needed to edit the HD version? Do you know the correct terrain value for AoE1DE? Because I'd like to mod that too.

The number of terrains in AoE DE is 96.

However, you shouldn't have to specify this manually. If the "Allow adding terrains" option is unchecked, AGE should correctly identify the amount of terrains. I forgot to ask: did you have the "Terrains" box already editable by any chance when you first tried? Because that might explain why this issue happened.
Having "Allow adding terrains" disabled is the default and recommended way. It will still display your old value greyed-out, but should correctly load the amount of terrains that is there in the dat.

Thanks for the help! Yes, "Allow adding terrains" WAS already checked on. I don't remember enabling it and I have no interest in adding terrains so I can't imagine why I would have...

Thanks again! :D
Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know where mods should be created/placed? In HD, I believe it was steamapps\common\AoE2DE\Mods\MODNAME.
However, when I do this for DE, the mods aren't showing up in-game in the mods section. I'm able to use AGE3 just fine, I just can't test anything yet!

Your mods are located in:
%USERPROFILE%\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\<your unique ID>\mods

(Note: %USERPROFILE% is your user directory, e.g. C:\Users\Admin).

I don't have a Games folder, and I don't have a Age of Empires 2 DE folder showing up in Document or Document\My Games. Maybe I'll try reinstalling the game in my C drive instead of D.

The "Games" folder is actually located in the user profile, and not in your Documents.
E.g.:
- C:\Users\Admin\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE
and not C:\Users\Admin\Documents\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE

Alternatively, you can access the directory by going to "Saves and Replays" -> "Open Saved Games Folder" in-game. Then going out of "savegame", and into "mods".

That did the trick, thank you so much!!
I was able to create a mod with AGE3, move it into the Games folder, test it in-game, and run it just fine! One last issue though, when I hit Publish Mod in the Mod Manager, I get the error message [Failed Publishing Mod. Error: Unhandled exception occurred]
