voobly+WK is great on all Platforms and there are Open Source implementations of the AoE2 engine being made. Don't be sad we don't have DE. The game will live on and eventually we get the version of it that we deserve.
Please don't buy it in the hopes that it will work one day, this will only reward the behaviour.
Disappointing bit of news but not unexpected M$ is renowned for their ability to shaft its customers without fail every opportunity they get... why would this be any different ?!
Does this mean that you've found a way to play voobly AoE2 on mac?
No. Wine won't work on macOS Catalina 10.15 but older Versions should be fine. Play on mac might make it easier. I only have tried voobly on Linux.
Here is a guide. People in the comments that have problems seem to be on Catalina which is officially not supported. Wine will detect it and not run on it.

In order to get WK running you have to install HD first.
WK is really amazing but the way to play the game now imho is DE. DE still is buggy but imho the best available version of the game.
