Also it helps to get the upgrades after you beat the game.
I had (IIRC):
150 HP, red gun 72/32/225, max speed (or one upgrade before max speed), not sure about the red gun main damage, might have been less, I think I could kill the small enemies in one shot though.
I used the red gun with the combo mostly (combo doing 225 damage IIRC). Having good speed is important (I think I had max speed or close to it).
I had only 32 damage on my altfire so I barely used it but it was handy to kill fleeing skeletons.
No melee at all.
The tactic I used was to stay in front of the entrance and kill alll enemies with main gun + combo (shoot a number of times then spam altfire to create series of big explosions, don't do the combo one by one), then finish the slow and tough ones with gun combo at close range.
If a couple of enemies slip by, don't pursue, let them go and have the regeneration heal you, you can try to snipe them but no more than a couple of shots, it's a waste of precious time to even try it anyway.
You must keep the spot or the enemies will split, as soon as you leave the starting area it gets much harder (esp. with the wave that has archers in it, you have to run after them so make sure you destroy them on the spot).
To catch up quickly (after killing the strong enemies), you can use the gren gun to place a beacon before attacking, so at the end of the wave you can teleport back to the front (sometimes the beacon gets stuck so try different locations to have reliable teleport). But normally if you're quick enough that is not needed.
Or you can just wait to have a strong alt fire and just cheese through :)
- Move up to the sawblade thing and float up using magnet to get a good view and spam primary fire of your gun (I had the AOE upgrade) for big amounts of chip damage on several enemies
- once enemies get closer to you fall back to your two health areas you are defending and start sniping and one/two shotting everything using alternate fire of your gun, just hold down the button
For me I could always hold alternative fire and never run out of energy. Primary fire could occassionally run out but it took a long time. Maybe you are just missing certain upgrades to make this easier. But it should definitely be do-able within a few attempts.
At the start of the round, teleport yourself just outside their start and fire another teleport ball for the next round, then switch to gun and start blasting. Don't worry about lone stragglers that get by, that's what your health regen is there to deal with. As long as you don't let them get to the portals in a chain you're fine to absorb 1 or 2 every so often. Shoot above large groups and combo once to thin stuff out, twice if you feel you can nail it slightly closer, and then mop up with splash damage.
Focus on the faster monsters to start the rounds. Those are the ones that can get to the portals and really outrun your health regen. After that it's just splash damage and combo explosions. If you have the cube telefrag upgrade it can be used to great effect against larger monsters. When you're pushed back to the portals start prioritizing whatever is closest.
Took a lot of upgrading though.
I used just one sponge - i blocked the end of the right lane with a beam between the sponge and the wood on the side. You can focus on the left lane and just kill the remaining enemys once left is clear.
