the game is so well known that you dont even need to type ni no kuni into google. simply search "best familiars" and you will see mega amounts of results spanning a decade.
there is no best imo they are all bad in there own way

As said, there are already resources for about any and everything in the game already, the game is old.

found a guide that said (note this is for when the party is 33, 33, 31 in levels and im at 23, 23, 20) Oliver: Might Mite, Sea nyad, Bighorn / Esther: Cutpurrse, Strongo, Burly Hurly / Swayne: Dunbelemur, Bone Ranger, Sprout Sprite, does that sound good
another thing IDK what the ideal team AI is like should i keep Esther on "keep us healthy" or not

You can get Griffy by exchanging the DLC ticket at the Temple, give it to Esther and level it up a bit. It levels and grows stats extremely quickly, to the point some people call it game breaking. It can carry your whole team for the first half of the game.

Some other good familiars you can have at this point
Oliver: Purrloiner, Little Bighorn (tank)
Esther: Drongo, Green Buncher (tank)
Swain: Thumbelemur, Bonehead, Monolith (tank)

The A.I. is kind of hopeless, I usually just keep it to "Do what you like" for boss fights.
The A.I.s will tend to use the first familiar assigned to them, so adjust that depending you what role you want them to play.

i've heard of griffy, no idea what temple or tickets you're talking about
and should i just give up on Swain's starter familiar

It's the Temple where Oliver and Esther did the three trials and learn how to evolve and tame familiars.
This Remastered edition of the game includes all the DLC tickets. You should have them in your inventory. You can exchange them to get the familiars by talking to Solomon at the Temple.

Swain's starter Hurly is a Milites type, which goes better with Oliver.

Ok thanks, and which is better, Mite or Hurly?

The is no reason for waiting to claim the DLC familiars.

I think Hurly=>Hurlcules is a very strong familiar also. But eventually everyone uses Dinoceros=>Catastroceros as Oliver's main attacker, which you should be able to get in another few hours. It can be found around the elevated platforms around the Temple once you get the ability to reach up there.

also i assume ignore the gold familiars as they are the same as their non-gold counterparts
i hate to keep asking but you're 100% sure i should replace Mite with Hurly, hes just been so reliable up to this point at least

Yeah, gold familiar is not stronger.
