He's being guarded by corrupted treant monkey thing though. If your not confident in melee, you might be better off entering from the other end of the Hive, because that brings you to the cliff above the monster, and you can just sit there and bombard it with arrows without retaliation. You'd have to fight your way past a few small fries, but your chances of accidental death go greatly down.
I actually had a slight problem with this quest too. He responded to me fine, but when I got back to town, I decided to talk to the innkeeper again and see what she says. She just repeats the same thing as before, but I think it screwed up my journal, because it told me I had the option of finding him again, and I was pretty sure that part of the quest grayed out after I found him.
Anyway, I did some shenanigans in debug mode, and found out that the journal was graphically glitched, and everything was normal.
In your case, I'm not sure, because he never said that to me. You could always try checking Debug Mode too, and seeing what quest triggers you have for "Doubts and Secrets". Zephyrien should have 3 quest flags that start with his name. You might be able to force the quest flag your missing (I think it was called "Zephyrien_Found", or it might have been the second flag, but I don't know what it was called, and I know it's definitely not the third flag).
Hopefully, this doesn't all sound like gibberish, but basically something's off.
I hope he is still there and quest isn’t bugged. This game should acknowledge when you’ve already done things.
