Not sure why would search steam for Mechcommander?
Cause battletech is garbage. Sacrilege comparing that to Mech Commander.
I wouldn't say 100% legal but no one is doing anything about it and you cannot buy it anywhere. Moment it hits GOG with the ability to run well on modern OS's without any issues it's full-price insto-buy, I played MC2 way too much back in the day and it's the reason I love Bushwhackers so much. Those mechs could last you a long time without needing to be replaced.
I remember the Fire Ant variant of the Flea, a surprisingly nasty little mech if you add armor to it. And the missions were based on tonnage, so a light mech swarm was possible if you had enough pilots alive and wanted to troll the AI a bit with say PPC spam.
It's been open source for 17 years.
This of course is what I learned when I started modding the game myself - many years ago.
The orignal mechcommander (and Gold) had a far better AI.
I wish we got Mechcommander 3. Basically everything Mechcommander 1 was, but maybe with a modern mech lab, more like MWO, and it plays like MC1 with the top down view, voiced pilots, etc, etc, but we could also direct control a mech like the old Men of War games, fighting with our mech from the 3pv. Men of War has some amazing direct control.
HBS is by all means a better a game. Its just not an RTS. But its mech selection is larger and better, as is mission variety. I won't judge graphics because of their time periods; I think MC2 looks good for its day and seeing iconic Clan mechs rendered in 2D in MC1 is really neat. Also, MC's mechlab is hot garbage. That isn't to say HBS is stellar in that regard, especially as a tabletop player. But HBS is way closer than MC1 or 2. Although I do prefer MC1's over 2. The only other gripe I have immediately with HBS is that it takes place in the often tired Succession Wars.
Just to warn anyone who is attempting to re-live the nostalgia or find a new memory with MechCommander 2: The game is basically a nigh lost cause on anything Windows 8 or newer. Your Mileage May Vary and such depending on hardware and what guide you follow to get it to work, but in general the game is considered a super hot mess to get to work, let alone work *well*.
Some mods, like OmniTech do work because they are basically modern takes on the source-code they released eons ago; but none of them have the capability of playing any of the videos. Such as the pilot ones or the story stuff. But if you want just gameplay, and then some; its your best bet. Although it still can be really finicky FPS wise.
I've tried to get MechCommander 2 to work, using numerous guides and numerous hardware over the last few years and never got it to work. Here's to ComStar's blessing to anyone else trying though.
On the brighter note, the drastically underrated MechCommander Gold runs absolutely flawlessly even on a modern Win10 system. With mod-support to get you to even run it on higher-resolution monitors. But the UI doesn't scale so running the game out-of-box suits me just fine. It works without any hardware hiccups or issues.
As for getting campaign vids to work that someone else mentioned, not sure what it is but on Windows 10 I can only get them to play during missions. Briefing vids just dont' seem to want to load. I'll have to have another look why this is. I think it has something to do with the way it plays with resolutions.
Anything hosted on Hard-Light and moddb is generally fine.
