[RANT] Keep dying at first Slayer Gate.
Seriously. If I somehow manage to get there, I even spare chainsaw fuel for a Dread Knight, but the second one or a Revenant kills me. Seriously, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but just can't pass that point. And I need the weapon upgrade points because I only intend to do Slayer Gates 1,2,4, and skip a lot of Secret Encounters, because I find the others too difficult. (UN/NM)

The first slayer gate was the most time consuming and the hardest out of the 6 (~70 minutes) in my first playthrough (Nightmare difficulty).

Doing the slayer keys is not something required for finishing the game. Just keep in mind the 3rd mission (Cultist Base) has a lot of combat arenas that might be even harder that the the first slayer gate and if you don't actually get better you might not be able to finish the game.

Right now you might be in over your head and you can do 2 things:
1. Lower the difficulty. If you have a big ego this might damage it a bit.
2. Keep trying until you adapt and than improve. For this you need a lot of patience.

Advice:
-The small demons keep spawning until you kill the bigger ones (Mancubus, Revenant...). So don't focus on the small ones to much.
-Stay mobile. Never stop moving.

Good luck.
Move around like a monkey. (USE THE DASH)
Kill the fodder demons with the plasma gun or sticky bomb launcher (lol).

Save up normal grenades for the big dudes. I usually use the plasma gun heat blast or HAR scope for those bullies... Or both at the same time thanks to quickswitching.

When you go to chainsaw some small fry, be sure to flame belch them before you chainsaw.

Invest in the right upgrades before starting the slayer gate (faster belch cooldown is essential for early game).

Never stop jumping after you get the Air Control rune. While you're learning the delicate art of jumping all over the place you might wanna learn how to Bhop in this game. Type " bind mousewheeldown _jump " into console and you can scroll jump (you shouldn't be switching weapons with scroll anyway).

Practise practise practise practise... Play Dark Souls as a warmup.

Once I cleared it on NM without dying/using extra life. Though yeah, now that you mention it, I grenaded Imps/gargoyles instead of big guys. Then I forgot to use Heat Blast despite having fully upgraded and I'm sure it would have made the fight a lot easier. I often did the mistake of approaching a Dread Knight head on instead of distancing myself from it, but now it was the opposite, he rushed to me with a Revenant. Thank you all for your input, I may as well practice a lot on NM if I die too many times there.
I have keys associated to weapons and use them to switching (something I started doing in Doom 2016) but I was always afraid of scroll jumping.

Dont get focus too much on any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Leave a trail of distraction and headout while not getting close to nobody is the most safest technique as far as I concerned.

The problem is the dread knight.
Not sure what to do with the prick when you got naught to work on, if you got the ice bomb at that point, that and auto shotgun is your best bet but not the safest because the swarm of fodder AI.

And Im not sure you actually played UN yet, but well, you die its over.
Slayer gates and some secret encounters dont worth it.
The unmaker just sucks

First Gate is hardest especially on nightmare.... Have Heat blast for your plasma
Go into the fight with Plasma
JUST KEEP ON RUNNING endlessly and just spam your plasma gun just spray everything.. toss grennades as your running use heat blast with flame belch to get some quick armour do this as your running look for a meaty group

... go from one side of the map to the next save up a FULLY CHARGED heat blast before the Dread Knight and revenant spawn...

When they do spawn i would focus on which ever is closer to you if its the knight use the fully charged heat blast on him this will faulter him, then toss a grenade and just feed em plasma he should be dead quick do not stop moving as your doing this circle him.

If its the revenant use the fully charged heat blast this will disable both of his launchers (destroying them) and just start shooting easy kill

Repeat

Its a wicked wild one the first gate the plasma gun is your best friend. :Archvile:

Or

You can always go back with full arsenal from mission select.

On UN honestly i skipped all slayer gates except for the last 2 because your arsenal is just to risky and skill is not as big of an issue as luck and what crazy unexpected way you might get f(_)cked by something because of spawn point or just how the enemy groups around you.
Unless your a person who wants to have %100 completion on UN then god help you have fun..I would feel good just to have completed the campaign.

No 💯 for me, thanks, but I have a feeling I need some weapon upgrades ready asap, and as Picasso has said, actually perfecting first Slayer Gate may serve as an entrance exam for whole UN campaign. Yeah I kill fodder with Combat ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and Heavy Cannon and spare plasma for the heavies but still mess up. Maybe it really is that my movement is bad, because I seem to do almost everything else right (i.e. which weapon to use, upgrading Heat Blast), I just have to learn to move. Or practice on NM without picking up extra lives.

On this point i recommend you watch some good players videos like Zero master and Draqu
i recommend Zero master because you need some talent to aiming like Draqu.
i don't mind you watch mine too lol.
You can always come back with more gear to complete the gates. For the first gate I have no idea how to help, but I used sticky bombs on shotgun to remove revenant mounts, arachnotron turrets, and other weak spots. Hell knights aren't that dangerous, unlike dread knights, and usually die/stagger to 6 sticky bombs. Had trouble with 3rd and 5th gates, had to restart a bunch of times, so decided to forego slayer gates entirely on UN, as if you die it's game over.
Just dash a lot, use frags on the knight landing point/stationary heavy demons, and use chainsaw to get more ammo, as it refills one charge if you have none left.
Honestly it's usually due to how you play. I typically move as much as possible, when theres large crowds of imps and gargoyles just spam your sticky bombs, also revenants aren't a problem if you just whip out sticky bombs on their rocket launchers. Just avoid the dreadknights as much as possible, stay away from them and shoot them with sticky bombs from afar. Also for the fodder enemies the plasma rifle works extremely well.
"This is just what I've tried to compile as advice, I usually trash it easily on nightmare so it may not be the best guide for it, since I don't get the problems you're having."

That confirms that 1,2,4 are indeed good picks for UN, although I sure as Hell will skip 6th as well. Nothing with an Archvile in it is worth the risk.

Though I get what you guys are saying, jump and dash like there is no tomorrow, distance myself from heavies instead of going in for one with Chainsaw and watch pro videos and if these all don't help, stick to regular Nightmare. I'll see what happens, thanks for your insights!
