DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal

Statistiche:
CPU i9-9900K temperature goes over 90°C in game, is this normal?
I was running the game at 1920*1080, medium quality, and getting 300FPS.
Generally this is quite well, but I noticed my CPU temperature went over 90°C.
The CPU is intel i9-9900K so I think it shouldn't get this hot. Is this normal?

Hardware:
CPU i9-9900K
Graphic NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super
RAM 32GB

Game settings:
V-sync off
resolution scale off
overall quality medium, except for a ultra texture pool
overlays off (steam, Geforce Experience, Xbox bar) which said to affect performance

Thanks.

Please limit your framerate to 144 or 60, depending on your display. No point going past those marks if your monitor can't handle it.

Please make sure you actually use a cooling solution. These temps look like you're trying to run the game off a laptop?

It's a desktop one. And I have a common fan cooler for my CPU. May be I should get a liquid one?
If it's not a software problem, may be I should think about the position or something about airflow.
Thanks for replying.

I thought about that but I couldn't find the fps limit options in game.
Trying frame rate limiter in NVIDIA control panel.

It worked for me. After setting frame rate limit the temperature was around 70°C.
Thanks for your reply.

Gsync / Freesync / Vsync will limit your framerate to what your monitor reports. Technically, you get a tiny bit less lag if you run higher framerates (the image is rendered less time before it gets displayed on the screen), but anything over 30 fps has a negligible effect on player performance in most real world cases. The visuals will look smoother at higher framerates, but only up to what your monitor can display, and super-high framerates (beyond what your monitor can display) can cause noticeable tearing artifacts if the screen starts shaking rapidly.

Triple buffering is better than double buffering since it gives you the same framerate limit but is a bit less laggy, and I'm pretty sure I saw a triple buffering option in Eternal's menu. Gsync or Freesync are the best options if they're available, as they remove almost all lag except the time to draw the image. But not all TVs and monitors support it.

90 Celsius is pretty common for CPUs to handle when they're warm. I've had processors that could handle 95 C, and GPUs that could get up to 110 C "safely". If you keep the temps lower, you'll get more life out of it though. This random PC Gamer article suggests 80 C as a safe cap for long term use, with spikes of 85 C from time to time. This Tom's Hardware forum thread[forums.tomshardware.com] suggests similar numbers for your specific processor. But a couple hours here and there at 90 C shouldn't hurt anything unless you're planning to keep that rig for the next decade or two. This Tom's Hardware guide[forums.tomshardware.com] also suggests 80 to 85 C as a safe cap, but mentions that the 9900K doesn't even start throttling until 100 C, suggesting it can handle pretty high loads without damage.

Playing through a level, my framerates swing from 60 to 120 depending on what's happening on screen, and max temps are about 60 C on the CPU (i5 6600k) and 80 C on the GPU (R9 390). So what you're seeing is high for my setup, but mine isn't extremely overclocked or anything, and I'm sitting at Medium settings with minimal motion blur and no DoF, so I might not be utilizing the CPU as much as you. Max load is 80% for my CPU, while it's sitting at 100% on the GPU.

I would definitely look into better cooling or reducing any overclock you're using for better longevity, but I don't think you're going to burn up the processor at 90 C, especially if it's just an occasional spike.
why are you playing the game on medium with these specs?

Wow this is professional. Learned a lot, thank you.

Well I don't care that much about effects. I'm satisfied enough if game runs smoothly.

He runs it Ultra-Nightmare friendly :p As in, guaranteed no crash with these HW specs and using such low resolution.

FYI, apparently the recommended setting for RTX graphics cards is 'high' if you having any issues. Including issues with lower settings.

No clue if it actually helps.
