Chainsaw everything or save for heavy demon?
Lately I've been saving fuel only for heavy demon but before I would chainsaw small demon whenever I can.

Chainsaw anything and everything. Those zombies shambling around may as well be ammo piñatas.

Depends, if you are playing on Ultra Nightmare it can be a good idea to save the chainsaw for some of the bigger demons in the first three levels in a few high risk arenas. Otherwise, no you are better off having your ammo maxed out instead of a full chainsaw.

On UNM I like having three pips to eliminate a heavy demon early on (in the first two missions I love using it on arachnotrons to speed up the level), but once you have the super shotgun and especially the armor drop for maxing it, honestly chainsaw everything.

I try to save chainsaw fuel for a heavy, it works well especially if a can is located on a map. Chainsaw heavy - wait to recharge - grab fuel can. Though I still get killed by Dread Knights on Exultia - wonder if I ever pass that point (on UNM at least).

The only dreadknights there, are the ones in Slayer's gates, 3 or 4 with as many revenants, it's totally worth it to save and use fuel cans on them, even though their attacks are super strong (for this point in game), it's not that hard to focus and kill one, just keep your distance, take em one by one, and youre good. Also sometimes they spawn in weird places on this map and die by themselves, I once saw just one spawning, but that would be quite a luck.

Heavy demons don't give more ammo upon chainsaw kill. You can get much more by cutting 3 zombies in half.

Like others have said, it's good for the first 3 levels. Beyond that chainsawing heavies is just a waste. Saving up fuel for mancubi in Cultist Base is recommended for the blood pit and second secret encounter. Before i saved up fuel for mancubi in cultist base most of my runs ended to that second secret encounter. 1 Manc, 2 whiplashes and 2 terminators without any room to move around in.

So does the correct weapon. Using the chaingun to quickly dispose of a hell knight and then chainsawing a fodder demon to regain that lost ammo is way more efficient than wasting 3 fuel bars for a quick kill.

Who chainsaws hell knights in this game anyway lol. The Dread knight and cyber mancubus exists.

That secret encounter is hard enough on UV.

About the chaingun vs Hell Knight part: You won't get chaingun until level 5, but no one in their right mind would waste fuel on a HK even on lower levels. Arachnotron on level 1, later Dread Knight, Mancubus, Whiplash are my pick in that regard. Sometimes Pinky if I forget that I could have blood punched them instead.

I was using the hell knight as an example. Every demon has a weapon that counters it. Mancubi can be greatly weakened by breaking off their arm cannons with sticky bombs or a precision shot. Whiplashes can be killed with one lock-on burst of the rocket launcher. Everything has a counter, so in my opinion using 3 whole fuel bars for a mancubus when it's more efficient to just shoot off their cannons and kill them then just doesn't make sense.
