What's the point of checkpoints in Master Levels...
... if you can't use them when you click "Continue Game" from the save slot menu?

I was playing Arc Complex and about two fights from the end of the level, my game crashed. I saw the "Checkpoint Reached" pop-up throughout the level and I thought "eh, I'll just continue from the last checkpoint", but nope, if I hit continue game, I got booted to the Fortress. Sucks.

Just where you continue if you happen to die.. They are lost after you exit, and must start from beginning if you play it again.

Yeah, the have-to-do-in-one-sitting thing is super lame. The game doesn't even have the courtesy to tell you it won't save your progress on master levels and mission replays either. I really hope this is patched at some point.
The Master Levels are meant to be blasted through at high speed in a single sitting as an optional challenge. Every level in the game can be run through pretty quickly once you know them well. (As with classic Doom.) The whole point is to get through much crazier waves of enemies as fast and efficiently as possible. The checkpoints are only there for when you die.

I'm actually glad that mission select doesn't interrupt the campaign position.

I guess they had to program. Master levels similarly.

The levels are too long for them to not allow checkpoints while replaying missions. Cultist base is an hour long. If I want to just play a quick game during a work break it's not possible with Doom eternal.

Yeah to be honest I think it doesn't make sense to lose progress on mission replays / master levels

I am playing famine mode now in nightmare but having to start over evrrytime is a bit much

Yeah especially if you want to play slayer gates or additional difficulty like famine. Sometimes you don't have the time to replay from the start

There are no Slayer gates in master levels. I don't think cheat codes like Famine work either.

That does apply for mission replay though, and I agree it could be tweaked.

Also, Cultist Base is only an hour for maybe the first playthrough. Once you know the map and the arenas decently well it should take less time.

Like acrade mode on D16, these are meant to be one-off bite sized experiences. Saving progress doesn't make a ton of sense in something that isn't part of progression, but instead is an all-inclusive challenge. Part of the challenge of the master levels is start-to-finish completion in a single run.

But yes, they should warn or explain it.
