No deathmatch....
The exclusion of a traditional multiplayer has taken this game from a pre-order the deluxe edition to a wait for on sale. This is my opinion on Doom Eternal, if you're a SUPER fan of the series def grab on release because Doom 2016 did not disappoint. I personally enjoy Doom 2016 multiplayer. If you aren't a Doom enthusiast just wait till it goes on sale. The new game mode is a 1v2 and personally that model doesn't hold any re-playable value to me if I can't even play with my friends (if I had any). Anyways that's my take on it would like to hear if anyone else agrees that they should bring back deathmatch. Are you still sold on the game even though they are doing away with this multiplayer?

Of course you're going to get people agreeing that there should be a traditional DM mode. Search the forum and you'll find plenty of them. Unfortunately we've proven that despite there being a bunch of traditional DM mode games out there, no one is playing them. Everyone is stuck on hero shooters, battle royale, or the latest WWII/war simulator. Why dump money into a traditional DM MP if only a handful are going to play it.

DOOM was first and foremost a SP game. Recent releases show that despite the marketers at publishing houses like EA convincing us that we need another MTX driven MP game, SP games are still big sellers when done right. Eternal doesn't need a DM mode. I would go so far as to say it doesn't need any MP mode.

Yeah that is true, majority of the community is stuck in BR. I wouldn't even say Champion shooters are popular as much anymore. As far as the game goes I'm more than positive it's going to be great! If my financial circumstances were different I'd even consider buying just the regular edition at launch. But for someone who has always been drawn to PvP the lack of it is just a let down for me. Guess I'll have to wait till the fall season for Halo Infinite until then I'll keep playing Doom 2016 MP lol

Agreed! They have made a new mode tho and apparently named it BATTLEMODE!

Iv been told it’s not the average battle royal mode that people are mislead to believe it is but rather a handicapped version were there is 2 monsters against 1 man! Lol his gona need all the luck he can get 😂

Dude... Doom INVENTED Deathmatch. Not having it is an affront to the history of this game. Then again, the fact that it looks like a grimdark Halo game is as well. If I wanted Halo, I'd play Halo -- and it's cheaper to do so -- but I was hoping for Doom, and this ain't it.
I would say Quake ushered in DM more than Doom. It was a cool addition to Doom but there were only a few niche pockets of people that took advantage of the ability. It was the Quake series with dedicated servers and purposefully designed maps that really brought DM to the forefront of MP gaming. It's why you see purposefully MP only releases of Quake and none of Doom.

Yeah, don't get me wrong in thinking that I don't want a traditional DM mode in Eternal. I would love to have the option if available. I'm don't often play MP but when I did it was always the classic DM. From 2016 I rarely played the other modes. If I entered a Team Play lobby that voted for Freezetag I would leave it and find another. Same with the basketball like mode whatever they called it, the CTF type without a flag.

Maybe we'll see DM in a future update, but from what we have seen so far there isn't one planned.

You saying it doesn't make it so. Quake had better market penetration because internet access was more widely adopted by then, and gaming had started to become less and less of a niche activity, but plenty of people were playing Deathmatch over dial-up in the Doom days. Doom invented the word "Deathmatch". Doom is the origin point for the entire idea of online FPS deathmatches.

Doom's DM functionality was more of a consequence, not an intent. Because of the way the engine worked, it was possible to have competitive multiplayer, and it became a "why not include this" feature after everyone at id realized it was fun.

There is a reason that Doom didn't have any dedicated deathmatch maps, and players spawn with all level keys/items.

Yes, it became the godfather of the genre (and Thresh invented WASD while playing Doom), but it wasn't a key point of the game, nor even a feature they in any way intended to become core. As I said, the fact that DM in Doom was literally released with only SP maps, including the locked doors and all, is a pretty good indicator that it was there because it happened to work, not because it was designed to be a real feature of the game.

If it hadn't been first and foremost designed for SP, I think at the very least there would have been a single multiplayer map in the released game.

I didn't say DOOM didn't play a part in creating DM but it wasn't until after DOOM released that the devs spent any time really trying to get it to work well. This is like the old tired argument of what was the first FPS. Is it DOOM? Wolfenstein 3D? What about Hovertank 3D? I bet most people say DOOM because it was as revolutionary as it was in the genre and in many circles it is granted that title.

If you want to be pedantic about it, Maze War, released in 1973-1974, was not only an FPS, but had online play over ARPANET. But, twenty years later, people weren't doing that kind of thing (mostly, apart from games like MIDI Maze/Faceball 2000) and games like Wolf3d and Doom created new interest in the genre. Doom was the proving ground for modern Deathmatch, and since Doom was on pretty much every personal computer in existence, it became popular enough that they basically HAD to include it in later games like Quake.

No one's saying Quake wasn't more fully developed than Doom. Making that argument is obvious to the point of being pointless. To say that it wasn't a big deal until Quake pretty much tells me you weren't around when Doom came out because otherwise, you'd know better.

I was around, and it wasn't really a huge deal. It was just the biggest deal thusfar.

It was the biggest deal up until then, but that doesn't change the fact that the game LITERALLY DID NOT HAVE A SINGLE MULTIPLAYER MAP.

MP may have gotten it's foot in the door, but there's a reason it's called QuakeCon and not DoomCon.

It was never a core, integral component synonymous with the game itself.

If you say "Doom" to the average gamer, they think E1M1. If you say "Quake", they think deathmatch (or "brown" if they've actually played it).
