No Japanese interface?
Getting tired of the Japanese games without Japanese support. I absolutely loved this game and this would have been an instant buy for me on pc. Guess I'm sticking to emulated.
I still own the original 1 and 2 on dreamcast but don't have my dreamcast anymore so I emulate it.

PC gaming is not very big in Japan...on the other hand, Shenmue (surprisingly) was never particularly popular in Japan.

No Japanese text, no purchase. I'm getting tired of this crap.

It might be possible to take the Japanese interface of the PS4 version and mod it into the PC version as a last resort, these days PS4 games have been cracked open so who knows.

It really makes my blood boil to see Japanese games without Japanese text, or not being sold in Japan for stupid reasons, it's disgusting, just stop doing it srly!! yeah there's not many PC players in Japan but by not releasing games you're making it worse is not helping!!.

No Japanese, no purchase.

It's like they're trying to sell sashimi without wasabi. Dumbass Sega.

I'm sure that somebody will patch the game. At least the audio is in Japanese. I'm such a Shenmue fan that I would get it even if there was no audio.

Yeah, I really wish they would put the Japanese text in the game. I have no idea what would be difficult about it.

Good news guys, JAPANESE is in the game after all.

All you have to do is go to the following directory:
'\Steam\userdata\"User ID"\758330\remote\sm1saves',

Then open the Settings file with MSNotepad, or your favourite text editor, and change the line:
"SubtitleLanguage": -1" to "SubtitleLanguage": 1".

The games interface will change to Japanese, and so will the notebook and moves etc.

Why this is a secret I don't know.

I heard somewhere that Macintosh gaming is quite popular over there. Bungie's Marathon has got quite a good Japanese fanbase according to TV Tropes. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/Marathon

Too Long Didn't Read version in case you can't find the part of the page in the link I mean.
Germans Love David Hasslehoff: Not exactly super popular, but in Japan the relative popularity of Macintosh computers and the slow decline of home-based ones (FM-TOWNS, X68000, PC-98 and so on) during that time resulted in a fanbase of a respectable size, and that is despite the general unpopularity of the FPS genre there. Perhaps befitting this, two regular contributors to the Marathon Vidmaster Page back in the day, Michio Hashimoto and Tomoaki Deguchi, are Japanese.

note: The Vidmaster page claims that Hashimoto "has put out more Vidmaster films on the net than anybody", which was true at the time, but by now other players have no doubt surpassed him, particularly if one counts third-party scenarios, in which case Dr John Sumner, who's vidded all of Tempus Irae, Tempus Irae: The Lost Levels, the original Rubicon, and about a dozen other scenarios in full, plus about two dozen others in part, not to mention the entire original trilogy, is no doubt the record holder - and even if not, given that he's vidded every single level in M2 with fists only, amongst other impressive accomplishments. (Note that some of these films have not yet been posted to the Vidmaster page.)

Japanese publishers still believe that releasing games on PC will decrease the sale numbers of the console version. So a lot of games aren't available in JP Steam store, and many games have JP text option removed/hidden/disabled to prevent Japanese gamers from purchasing them from key retailers.

Great news, but keep in mind that Sega removed the hidden Japanese language option from Jet Set Radio some time ago. I won't be surprised they will do the same with Shenmue once the upper management finds out about it. Time to disable automatic updates and backup the game, I guess.

I just tried forcing Japanese subtitles via ini with the latest beta patch v5 and it looks like they removed the Japanese subtitles from Shenmue 2 but not from Shenmue 1 yet...

Sega = Tyrant
mikef12306 Oct 8, 2018 @ 9:57pm
I originally started this topic to bring attention to Sega the fact that there are non Japanese players who prefer to have their games in Japanese. Therefore I've decided to keep the topic in English. I very well could have done this topic in Japanese but I don' t think it would have been as effective. We are already 5 pages in consisting of comments from mostly non Japanese players. iThis topic proves there is a mix of players outside of Japan who either understand Japanese or don't that prefer the original untranslated game.
Obviously you get the uneducated troll here and there who refers to me as a "weeb" but nothing that can be done about that. I'm sure he didn't properly read the thread or put much thought into his comment.
Like I said in my previous post, I work as a translator. I know too well that Japanese is very different from English in every possible way. Most of the time the translator has to take the liberty of changing and rewording the sentence completely in order to make sense in English. Depending on the skill of the translator, that could come out really bad very easy. That was the case with this game. So much was lost in the translation.
I'll leave the topic open but let's all try to ignore the trolls and keep this thread as productive as possible.
