Is this game like Sleeping Dogs?
If so, I might get it.

If by "like" you mean it has martial art combat, a good story/characters and lots of interesting things to do, then yes its similar. Shenmue has no guns, cars, upgrades, etc.

Shenmue has some similarities to Sleeping Dogs. It is set in an open world Hong Kong (Shenmue 2), has martial arts combat and was influenced by Hong Kong action/kung fu movies. Main difference is that Shenmue has a lot less action (and no driving and shooting). It is more about exploring the world, living in it (life sim elements) and piecing together the story. Also Sleeping Dogs is a lot darker with all the gangster stuff and violence while Shenmue has a lighter tone.

They both have martial arts, vending machines, some occasionally hilariously bad dub work, revenge plots, and an atmospheric open world. Shenmue II also takes place in Hong Kong. However, it's a genre defying game that mixes many different gameplay elements and styles, and has a slower burn at first. It's closer to the Yakuza series than Sleeping Dogs, but has similarities to both. I'd highly recommend it.

As far of all of them I'd have to disagree. It's certainly not an exact match, but there are many similarities, and Yakuza in particular is widely considered a spiritual successor to Shenmue. It's a fair comparison to make.

Ehhh... it is, but it is not. Besides being in a Japanese setting with fighting, it virtually has nothing to do with Shenmue which is quite sad. I tried the beginning to mid game and then just stopped. I could not go on. I went back to Shenmue.

Shenmue is more like kung fu movies from the 70's / 80's than games imo.
