The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II
So we finally got the japanese voices...
I've played with them a little bit, and, I didn't think I'd ever say this... but so far I might like the english VO better.

What do you think about them so far? How do they compare to the english voices? Does the japanese VO cover more of the game than the english VO?

Opinions much appreciated.

I'm far used to the English voice acting by now overall. Some voices I do prefer in Japanese though, only if I could mix and match like a fighting game. :compa:

I agree that duvalie has a particularly, shall we say, questionable VO in english, but I find myself really missing some of the other english voice actors. Marisha Ray does a particularly good job with Laura, Fie is also excellent, and Matt Mercer is as always brilliant as Prince Olivert.

I'm wondering if my judgement is clouded because I got attached to the voices. I can't tell.

So which voices do you guys like better in japanese, and which in english?
The English VO cast has some of the biggest names in the dubbing industry as those voices can be. Indeed, Matthew Mercer is a big name along with Cassandra Lee Morris (as Fie) (who is also one of my favorite voices). Marisha Ray's husky voice is as excellent as Mariya Ise's Japanese counterpart. Since I played the Eng voice, I'd heard Marisha Ray also characterize Laura's voice as an Amazonian kick-ass and an alluring alto femme.

Matt Mercer is contrasted by Takehito Koyasu who is in his own right iconic in Japanese voices. Both voices have a charisma that fit perfectly with Olivier's essence; neither language loses Oliver's charisma.

It's kinda funny how like in actual Hollywood, certain voices are typecasted. For example, I've only heard Patrick Seitz (Vulcan in CS, also Zin in Sky) voice muscle-bound buff dudes in dubs (Endeavor in MHA, Uvogin in H x H). Matthew Mercer usually voices tall, lanky, cool dudes in dubs (Leorio from H x H, Levi from AoT, Jotaro from JJBA). Cassandra Lee Morris usually voices petite sweeties, sometimes hot-heads (Aisaka Taiga from ToraDora, Ritsu from K-On!).

I think that a lot of my enjoyment of the English VO does stem from simply having played that version and only listening to bits and pieces of the Japanese VO. It comes down to simple exposure.

They dont live in Japan....why would u want japanese voices?
There is NOTHING wrong with the English voice actors. The English VA Nail the characters perfectly. Hearing them speak Japanese is like listening to Japanese Darth Vader

Japanese gaming seems to have more professional VA's overall.

It's all subjective at the end of the day though.

It isn't really the case with Xseed but most companies seem to hire random people with Valley Girl accents.

When talking about Cold Steel VA's why does no one mention "Misty" (to avoid spoilers) her JP voice is soooo much better, but otherwise apart from a few exceptions the ENG VAs are much better.
I'll be frank: playing any decent Japanese game with voiceover in different language is crap. Good seiyuus really know how to do their job extremely well regarding voiceplay (or should I say, screenplay), and losing the whole live emotional part of the game is terrible.

Alas, this emotional part is not easy to re-convey, and translators rarely have time/power necessary to 'live into' the original script up to the point of playing it good. Another hard part of it with Japanese games is voice pitch. Both male and female, especially high-piched female voices. Original voicing is meant to be part of character profile, and it's hard to change.

I'm not saying the English translation of Sen is bad in particular, but it's all as with other translations. The good parts are translation and overall fluency, I did not feel it out of the world. But as usual, lots of emotions are lost / feel too forced, and voices are a mess compared to characters' personalities.

As a strong example, just listen to Laura's dialogues. Even being replaced with excellent actor... the intonations lack in power so severely compared to the Japanese version that it's barely passing: the voicing is good overall, but it lacks character.

I don't know dude I have seen some really bad ♥♥♥ voice actors too, just look at Rean's, the guy has the same emotion for every single line. To me its a case by case thing when it comes to voice acting. Just look at Cowboy Bebop, even the ♥♥♥ people prefer the dub because it is so good. Even during the PS1 era. We had games like X4 which had TERRIBLE english voice acting but we have also had megaman legends which has an amazing voice acting, especially the voice of Tiese......too bad the guy was a pedophile....

It just kinda feels weird to me to play jrpg with english voices, in kiseki's case it's fitting, but still weird, that and Altina Rean and Crow are voiced by my favorite VAs in original(JP) dub.English dub Alfin is great tho.
i do prefer ♥♥♥ voice but i gotta say some of then actually annoy me, like vita, sharon and almost everygirl that abuses the "tehehe giggle"

though the English VA is quite good (except for Alisa I cant get to like it) i will still play with ♥♥♥ mainly because i absolutely love Laura Voice so i might be a little bias

i think its a matter of taste, i honestly prefer Laura english VA. her JP dub just doesnt feel right to me, it not the Laura i had in mind. but then again, its a matter of taste :Ssha_VII:
Prefer ♥♥♥ voices, especialy Duvaile sounded way better in ♥♥♥, and most party members sound foe me better, other than Laura and Gaius, then I would put on same level.
Few I found to be better in English, those are Rean and Phantom Thief.
There are few problems with Eng, and why I would prefer ♥♥♥ VA in all ♥♥♥ games,
1. I am not from English speaking country, so I dont care for Eng voices, because I READ dialoge not listen to it.
2. I am hearing same Eng VA in way too many games.
3. Sounds like Kyaaaa,Hayaaa, laughter and so on are missing from translations or are almost always sounding very off.

considering the fact that i recognize the majority of the japanese VAs from past(they're all AAA) I could never switch to english.

Like persona 3/4, its better in english
English dub Alfin is great tho
Indeed, Alfin(e) is the only dub I cannot complain being out of character about :)
Ive never played it with japanese VA, but considering that the game has done in western style "world" english voices are very fitting, which is not the case for some other JRPGs ( even if they are good there ). I like alot of characters voices, cant even name my favorite, maybe Rufus? It fits his face animation really well. Fie is really good too in my opinion.
