Why doesn't metal slash work?
It does the same damage as a normal attack on metal enemies, such as the eggsoskeletons. I don't get it.

The thing is against metal slimes most attacks have extremely poor accuracy but Metal Slash is a pretty much guaranteed hit.

The damage is still super poor due to metal slimes astronomical defensive stats but if you have two or three people with the skill, or a pep skill combining a few party members metal slime killing skills then you stand a chance at taking out the slimes before they run.

It's not 1 damage.

Seen the AI use those moves against metal slimes. Either does 1 to 2 damage to them and I don't think it ever misses. Does really seem like a waste of a move if it is ONLY for metal slimes, though.

That said, I think CLAWS have a move called "Can Opener" that says it does bonus damage to ROBOTIC/METAL enemies. Don't think Metal Slash mentions anything about robots...

The metal attacks are made even worse by the fact that Erik has an auto crit attack and spears have an attack that is 50/50 miss or crit. Since crits ignore defense they always one shot metal slimes. Just one spear user with the 50/50 will dramatically increase your metal kill chance.

I've just started trying to farm metal slimes in the early game near Gallopolis. I've finally got a character that has a metal ability, which is Jade, but sometimes the Can Opener move still misses, just like a normal attack, and so far I have only seen it do 1 damage which is no different than the normal attacks of my other characters. If the move can miss then what is the point in using it? I seem to hit just as often with the regular attacks of my other characters dealing the same damage without the metal abilities. Doesn't seem worth it to me to waste the points on those moves. Erik with decent daggers can deal 2 points in 1 turn if both strikes hit. Same with claw wielding characters. Unless I just have really bad luck with metal abilities I might just stick with regular attacks.

Update: I just ran into two slime fights back to back. Both times I kept trying to use Can Opener with Jade on the slimes. 2 out of 3 attacks failed, and the attacks that did hit only did 1 damage. Whereas all of my other characters with just normal attacks were dealing 1 to 2 damage every 1 to 2 turns, and Rab hit for 1 to 2 damage pretty much every time since he was getting two chances to attack with every turn, so yeah, unless my luck is total @#$% then the metal attacks don't seem to do anything better than normal double attack weapons or skills.

Don't think Can Opener is the move for metal slimes. You want that Hawkeye something move—that one never misses.

Can Opener is only for robotic type enemies I think.

There's no attack that can do more than 1 or 2 damage per hit on metal slimes without critical hits. Your best bet if auto crit skills are not available are multi hit skills (for more chances to hit) or skills that always hit (like Hawkeye Claw).

The other option is to use multi hit skills in conjunction with metal slime swords. Metal Slime/Liquid Metal/Metal King weapons never miss on metal slimes and can be very effective at killing when combined with any skill with a lot of hit. Crits are still the most effective method and the only viable way to kill Metal King Slimes in one round.

Hmmm......that's odd, because Can Opener said that it's a 'metal rending move' that is effective against mechanical enemies, so maybe I'm just misinterpreting that. Does hawkeye hit more than 1 time? If not I might just stick to regular claw attacks.

Ah, I see. I haven't found any liquid metal weapons yet this early in the game. Thanks for the tip, I will look those up.

The first set of metal slime weapons (there are 3 teirs) officially become available when you reach Arboria in part 2. The sword and boomerang are rare drops from enemies north of Gallopolis part 2 if you want them early.

Use poison needle.

Actually, Metal Slime Swords first become available in the Puerto Valor Casino in act 2. They cost 250000 tokens each. You later get the recipe book to craft all the metal slime weapons from a side quest in Zwardrust (A Long-Lost Literary Love). The recipe book for Liquid Metal Weapons is found in the final Act 2 dungeon.

You sure? I could swear the metal recipe was from the quest in Arboria. If its from Zwardrust that is even sooner. So early its definitely not worth buying the casino ones.

i think id rather depend on insta kill crit skills like Lightning Thrust (jade-67% crit) than 1-2 dmg metal swords with poor base dmg for other mobs, but dunno. maybe im missing something

The first two tiers of metal slime weapons are the best you can get at the point you get the recipe for them. The king tier you will have all the evolution weapon recipes but you'll probably want the metal king sword or rang for offhand use.

You are correct that force crit abilities are the way to go for metal hunting but I said that back up in the 4th post of this thread. The topic has shifted.
