I'm guessing you have a weapon skin set, and that skin prevents the look of the new weapon being reflected on the character when you find a new one. But when you find a new weapon the skin is automatically unlocked. So you can stick to a skin you live or just turn the skins off and you'll easily see what the new weapon looks like.
Also the Long Sword is the Dull Sword only not rusted, it's the same skin/weapon. The Crude sword looks also totally different :)
Yep, weapons by default will not have the skin set. They will change as you change them unless you go set a skin in the outfit menu.
Remove the skin, so it will display each weapon's true appearance.
