games good but its not the best no where near
Really? Where? It gets rather contrived towards the end, and the pacing is bad, but I don't recall the characters acting that dumb, at least not in a way that isn't believable and in-character.
It depends what kind you like. Obviously there are some other Tales games here that are roughly similar (people who act like they are absolute night and day from each other are exaggerating). Final Fantasy is here, most of which are quasi-turn based and the stories tend to be mediocre but very dramatic. Dragon Quest XI was very well received but it's round based and very light on story, over all. Persona is here for a VERY anime feel. Stuff like Disgaea is here for strategy JRPGs. Ys is here for real-time combat with only light story, although I hear the newest one has more focus on story. And the Trails series (Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel) are very popular with a heavy focus on story--I loved the very first one to death, and hated the second one so much I never managed to force myself to play more in the series.
Arise has ZERO world exploration and you fight the same enemies from start do finish
This game is much more a hack n slash with JRPG elements
It's not the best even in Tales Of serie, Symphonia / Berseria / Vesperia are better
So imagine best JRPG on the entire steam store where we have FF9 and Persona 5!
The game play is fantastic (to the degree that even playing on Ultimate difficulty the whole time there were very few times where I felt like I just couldn't beat an enemy without getting stronger. Even though I didn't REALLY get the hang of the combat system until the final dungeon. When I finally started to swap a lot between characters during combat and went, "Oh dear god I've been playing terribly this whole time.") and I never really got bored even bashing my head against the wall of a boss over and over for an hour.
The graphics... are there? I mean it's a Tales games so the art itself is nice but I'd never say that these are 'good graphics'.
All in all I'd say it's fantastic, but I still wouldn't say it's the best. For me that will always be Symphonia. Though if I set aside my bias I do have to admit that overall Arise is a better game, but I just love the characters and story of Symphonia way more.
Basically jrpg the plot.
Make up your mind. Do jrpgs have good stories or not? Because your earlier explanation applies to most jrpgs that exist.
That said people usually rank jrpg gameplay aspect high, not low. I'd argue most would rather play a jrpg with weak story and good gameplay, then great story and low gameplay.
They acted realistic. And someone only needs to read threads discussing Tales of Arise's story (or most any discussions on the internet these days) to see how acting beyond dumb is all too realistic. Real people are often idiots. Its very rare to find someone that is only rarely an idiot. You arent going to find anyone that is never an idiot.
This is pretty different from most jrpg or anime (also western TV and Movie) characters, as those are made to be ''larger then life''. Meaning they dont act like idiots often unless the plot requires it, and are complete badasses most of the time.
Previous Tales of games had characters written in that way. Hence why there's a lot that dont like the characters in Arise as much. They are too real. Too flawed. Too human.
Not enough superhuman chads.
I always forget that one exists. Noone ever mentions it anymore. 7, 10 and 13 are all people really talk about. (as they try to avoid talking about 15, heh)
Is 9 really that good? I really like 12 a lot. I tried 13 some time ago, and it bore me to death I didn't even bother to finish. It was ♥♥♥♥ imo
Honestly, I don't see where the characters were that dumb. In fact, compared to "western TV and movies" these days, they act way less stupid, as Hollywood relies upon idiocy to drive the plot or create drama ALL THE TIME. Here, their mistakes are believable, their actions understandable, their motives realistic. The only real exception is Law and Rinwell in that one scene; you know the one--that was incredibly stupid. But that was also "larger than life", really exaggerating for effect, not just dumb for the sake of dumb.
I also agree with him that gameplay is not as important for JRPGs; alot of them have very simple combat systems and survive on story, while it's pretty hard to do that in an FPS or a platformer. Your argument about what "most would rather play" is contradicted by the entire history of JRPGs, especially older ones.
And I have no idea why you're agreeing with him that the plot is "black and white"; it's not, and that's the entire point.
13 is trash, yes. I also didn't bother finishing it the first time, and I did eventually come back and replay it to the end, but it's bad.
9 is good but overrated; it has a ton of plot holes and contrivances, and it's one of those games that's SO easy it feels boring, but if you gimp yourself, it just feels cheap (like, if you aren't immune to sleep or something when fighting some particular boss, you're going to be destroyed, but it's very easy to make yourself immune to sleep, trivializing the fight). However, it has a ton of charm, good pacing, entertaining characters, cool scenes, etc. It's very MCU feeling. I like it from time to time, but even for the genre, it's hard to take seriously.
