first playthrough is always English voice for me, so I don't have to read the sub while fighting

mostly JP. Though I actually prefer Shionne's EN voice in cut scenes.
English for me. I rather understand when a character gives me quick info about what is happening during battle for example : during Balseph second phase with the huge fire elemental. your teammate warns you that the fire elemental is about to attack so you get the hell away from it. I would probably got hit if it was injapanese.

Aha, I don't think it's a question at all.
For almost any good Japanese game, Japanese voiceover is a must.
Otherwise you lose good half of all the stuff professional actors put into it.

That's right!

Japanese VAs = Professional voice actors. Years of training in voice acting schools. They've been passionate to become a voice actor since they were young.

English dubbers = People who wanted to be Hollywood actors but got rejected. So they're doing what they're doing as some second or third choice job. Just doing it to make a living. No passion.
That's complete bull but no surprise coming from you.
JP voices more often than not.
EN isn't as expressive and usually don't fit the character.

That's the case for most Japanese games but not for Capcom (Resident Evil, DMC), Konami (Metal Gear series), Bayonetta and Death Standing. So it's obvious that Tales of Arise would sound best in Japanese since it's the original not a dub like in cases above.

I feel like kisara's english VA did a better job than the Japanese VA. However, Alphen's voice in better in Japanese.

English dubbers don't usually have a problem with stoic woman characters.

Actually, they're known for sounding like they're reading a script while recording.
(PS4) This game was my first exception: I get a much broader spectrum of intonation, nuances and subtext from the English version
In Japanese they sound always awkward and too polite, even after knowing one another better after some time

I played through the entire game and really enjoyed the JP VOs until I was achievement-hunting and put on EN for a change. I was appalled when I heard Dohalim's voice, like shocked.

Shionne is also alot chipper on EN, not her usual reserved self that more matches the character animation and face imo.

Kirasa was actually better in EN tho.
