This game is pretty anime-ish but I think it's definitely more approachable for Western players than most Tales games. Since the vast majority of the cutscenes and stuff are done via CG and the CG is not as anime styled as Zestiria or Berseria, it's less likely to put people off immediately. It's also a pretty dark story and honestly the beginning reminded me a bit of Western games and I was starting to get worried that it would turn into a Western-style grimdark/gritty story and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ character writing. The Calaglia section wouldn't have seemed out of place in a Western game like God of War at first appearance. It does get more anime-ish after the Calaglia section, but it eases people in. It'd definitely less weebish than, for example, Persona 5 or Xenoblade Chronicles.

But honestly, I wouldn't try introducing people who hate on weebish stuff to good games anyway. The effort is wasted on people without good taste.

If it was too weeby I wouldn't play it. It's full of Japanese character cliches, but no cutesy crap, anime slapstick, etc. On par with "serious" anime. if your friends can't handle GitS, Cowboy Bebop, or the more serious Ghibli films steer them away. Otherwise probably kosher.

People who don't like Japanese stuff can't be my friend.

You know, there were other 90's Anime beyond Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebobp...

I'm a fan of obscure stuff, like Saber Marionette J, Tekkaman Blade, Ghost Sweeper Mikami...

I know. Most of them are for weebs, and your non-weeb friends have never heard of them.

The dialogue is filled with redundant retelling of prior events or exposition that seemingly undermines the player's ability to read the air or attention span as well as obvious foreshadowing of plot such as the mask reacting to the master core, the resistance leader's reaction to one of the future party members, the whole concept of lords dictating the structure of the entire game before you even finish the prologue and so on.

The game feels the need to express moments of bridling anger or other forms of emotion with redundant wording and what I would coin 'Japanese moaning' noises that is often employed by voice actors these days. These work to an extent if you play it in the game's native tongue but come off as amateurish in English, most Japanese developers seem to be stuck in the early 2000s with their writing and someone should really start recommending them some exemplary literature in earnest.

Furthermore, the story has non sequitur moments such as Alphen seemingly not caring to evacuate Doc and the other slaves after bothering to break through Kyrd Garrison, which can barely be described as a garrison.

To put it briefly: if your friends are young teens who haven't yet developed a standard for what constitutes good or bad writing, they might not mind this mess of ideas strung together.

Finally I would recommend you to look for opinions elsewhere in the future, 'Tales of' series has slowly, at this juncture mostly, been swaying towards the 'bad' kind of anime game since the fusion of Team Wolf and Baba's terrible decisions with Zestiria and Berseria being particularly offensive, similar in quality and integrity to Neptunia games. That is to say, you're basically asking a crowd of weebs whether your friend should play a weeb game; you're dealing with confirmation bias.

I can only understand if a character is sad or angry if they scream like a maniac into the air while their eyes pulsate. Storytelling through body language and facial animations is over rated.
Pie Eater 2021 年 9 月 17 日 下午 1:26
If they don't have contempt for anime tropes, overtly familiar japanese creature designs, and can't tell when they've been re used ad nauseum then it's worth a shot to tell them to check it out on sale.

The game straddles the line between stale, roll your eyes tropes, and "tried and true" in my opinion.

Both are overrated.

Conveying Emotions through Body Language is as loud as making character scream when they're angry.
Difference is is that latter is at least very honest, while former makes visuals cringy.

I prefer "Convey Emotions without showing any emotion". Make the audience feel the moment instead. Let the audience to feel any emotions they want to feel, don't force the itended emotions to them.

That's why i love Silent Protagonist. Their Poker-Face'ness shows you that instead of playing as biased emotional idiot, you play as a smart person who knows better than anyone, and lack of emotions helps them to find the most rational solution.

I'm mostly joking. But I think you miss my buried point. These anime games almost use the same delivery every time. For instance, "scream boi" moments to show us the particular character is sad and angry over a catastrophic event; The gut wrench, eye pulsating scream with one large roar and pained groans.

What you seem to describe is traditional JRPG's and old school low detail games...and I agree it works well in those. But in this game Alphen is a written character who emotes and has a presence....... a traditional goody twoshoes help everyone Mamoruwa sword boi. I mean, everyone can't be a bloody plank "Conveying emotion without showing emotion".

its rather cheesy, particularely the ending. i generally dont recommend jrpgs to friends who i know dont even watch anime. so, no, i would definitely not recommend em tales of arise.
Elrodeus 2021 年 9 月 17 日 下午 5:01
I think you can show anyone that's interested in this game the opening Tales of Arise animation. If they think it looks cool, they will probably like the game. If they mention that it looks cringe/weeb they probably won't like the game. Easy enough. : )

so you say anybody who like the anime opening likes the game? what? are you actually serious? thats like saying anyone who likes the ost will like the game.

I'm as serious as OP. lol Anyone who watches the opening of the game knows what they're getting into. Anime is more mainstream in the west now than it has almost ever been. Tales series has always wore that inspiration on their sleeve.

Most people make purchasing choices on snap decisions. It's the reason why most people know if they like or hate a song within the first 15 seconds and why some people like things just because of aesthetics. It's also likely the same reason you responded so negatively to my original 2 sentence post.

I'd have to wager nothing I said here will matter to you and I should expect you to tell me how ridiculous it is for someone to base their purchase of a game on an opening movie, even though the reality is games have been purchased based on marketing of that very nature for decades.

so you say this games identity boils down to "anime"?
there are more than enough people who like anime and jrpgs but dont like the tales series.
also, some like turn based combat but an action combat is a dealbreaker.
some like anime but they dont like jrpg.
some like anime and tales but not arise.

you get what my point is right? i think you are oversimplifying to a rediculous degree when you say: just show them the opening scene, if they like that they will like the game. they will not know what they are getting into by that. they have no clue about the games systems, the story, the combat, nothing. they see a bunch of characters out of context and thats it.

have you ever watched an anime you dont like but you liked the opening? thats exactly the same thing. and even if you dont, its not that unlikely right?

the question is not if tehy would buy the game based on the opening, sure you could be right that ppl who dont need to turn every penny probably every now and then buy stuff they have no clue if they will like or not. but when it then comes to actually liking it or not, i am pretty sure you are dead wrong my dude.

Yes, well your response was pretty much what I expected and it appears you think your opinion is fact. I hope you're enjoying the game, but from the sounds of it you're not. Have a great day.
