Sometimes they say random things, but they may not.
A difficulty question would be like "Are you angry" "Do you want us to leave"
A location question would be like "What is your location" "Is anybody with us"
A age question would be like "How old are you" "When were you born"
A personal question would be like "Are you a male or female" "Who is this"
You have to say these exact words otherwise it might not respond if the ghost uses the spirit box.
Indeed, the Spirit Box only responds to proper questions; however if you don't have a mic (or have it muted) the Spirit Box does randomly spew out responses if it's near the ghost. If the game detects input from your mic it reverts back to question response only.
* If your voice recognition is working you can no longer get a response on the Spirit Box just by talking, it will now only answer if you asked a question.
*snip*
* If your voice recognition stops working the Spirit Box will default to giving a random response by talking.
