Ghosts additionally had some AI upgrade last patch in October. They will now go to your last known location if they have no other viable targets. This makes sense given what I have seen. I watched someone through a camera last night as a hunt unexpectedly started while I was out getting more equipment from the van. I watched as a ghost walked down the stairs in high school as its room was up stairs. It saw someone go into one of the rooms downstairs. It walked right up to that room, walked through the door like it knew they were there and killed them.
So my guess was it heard/saw the player enter one of the rooms downstairs, had no other targets so just kept trying to follow that player. The other thing too is that the player was hiding behind some kind of book case or object that you could see through. Because the ghost tries to draw a line of sight check to your head, its possible it could actually see the player's head through the door and the object as it was not a solid object. I feel the safest times I have had when being hunted by any ghost was when I was not in line of sight of the door, hiding behind a big solid object, or hiding in a closet/locker inside another room with the door closed. I rarely get killed and I always have my flashlight on. I think I've maybe died 3-4 times and I'm over level 160 now.
One example is they will almost always enter the ghost room itself, which is why hiding in that room can be dangerous. Even if it spawns in the hallway, chances are it will walk into the ghost room and the door does nothing to stop it. They can however also walk into other rooms. Usually they don't but they can.
That is why I typically run a short distance before hiding, because near by rooms might be in their patrol path and you want to avoid that if possible.
