they only prevent the ghost from starting hunts within their range. hunts can still start outside of their range. the crucifix does not deter an already hunting ghost, or end a hunt.
and yes, it will vanish after it prevents two hunts.
In the neighborhood house maps, the a single crucifix is enough to cover most rooms (typically excluding the garage or kitchen/dining room if it has a large one). In the farmhouses, high school, and asylum, even both crucifix's will not be enough to cover most rooms. So you can't guarantee your safety.
