This game or Horizon Chase Turbo?
These two games both came out in a space of a week or so, which one should I get?

I would suggest trying Horizon Chase: World Tour on mobile. The first few races are free and the whole game is only $3 to unlock. It’s pretty much the same game as HC Turbo. At the very least, you’ll get a feel for the game and be able to decide whether it’s worth $20 on PC.

In my case, I bought Horizon Chase on mobile (I have a tablet + controller), and got Slipstream on PC.

I am more impressed by Slipstream than Horizon Chase if you ask me.

I bought both this week. While HCT is the more complete game (multiplayer, more cars, more tracks, etc) I can't get over how bored I feel when I play it. Somebody mentioned the handling being better, but it's more like 'automatic' because in the first few tracks you basically have to try if you want crash. I'm only at the second zone however, so I'm hoping it becomes more challenging. Split-screen multiplayer is a game changer though, and it doesn't seem like Slipstream will be getting any kind of multi.

I can see myself playing Slipstream a lot. The sense of speed is addictive, the driving is more nuanced than it seems based on the little tutorial, and I really like how the rivals work even if they are kind of goofy. I think the collisions are a little too punishing, especially when rivals can apparently PIT you when if you even touch them slightly you go flying. Also it's too easy to go into slip stream while tandem drifting and just smash into them. I also wish there was any kind of tuning outside of grand prix (which is super rudimentary) but as it is I really like the game.

You know, I had that on my wishlist for a while, but I dropped it because I'm not into import tuner racing on city streets. I just canNOT stand Need for Speed: Underground and games like them.

But I still like arcade racers. And, hell, I'd love to see a new Ridge Racer or something like. Should I get that? Because I kinda don't want to. Just doesn't seem my style at all, really.

(If you have to know, my style's more Sega Rally, Hydro Thunder kind of thing: off-road, and preferably point-to-point instead of circuits; and if it has to be pavement, it's more like NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 from back in 2002, or for a more recent example, DriveClub on PS4.)

I have not played Horizon Chase Turbo yet, but after playing this game I just don't find it fun at all. The controls are awful, there is no analog, the controls feel completely digital even when using an analog stick, powersliding from one corner into another successive corner is literally impossible, leading to multiple crashes IN THE SAME CORNER as the car takes a few seconds before it becomes controllable again, and the way the car moves over the the side of the screen when sliding is disorienting. And the grid positions in Grand Prix mode mean NOTHING when everyone overtakes you at the start anyway.

I have seen other reviews of the game comparing it to Outrun, which I love dearly, but really, this game is nothing like Outrun at all.
I'm going to try out Horizon Chase Turbo before requesting a refund on this game, but really, I find no fun at all when playing this game, it's just infuriating.

Ouch. You sound frustrated. I too felt some of that frustration initially with Slipstream, but after two days of playing it on and off, I can absolutely see myself getting better. It's not "bad", it just behaves in its own idiosyncratic way, as its physics aren't simulated like in a modern game, but rather approximated like in a real 16-bit racer.
As far as controls go - I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure the car movement is analogue with my Dinput controller.
It may not have the mirror polish of the classic Outrun, but I'm willing to give this a chance.
Alright, I'm going to actually contribute to the main discussion here:

BUY Slipstream. NOW. DO IT! Yeah, so the game annoyingly gives all your rivals in GP and QR nitro right at the start and you have to run them down. But believe me, even on Hard(which is still a challenge, don't get me wrong), once you actually get up to speed, you'll be running down your opponents so swiftly that you won't actually be able to make use of the "Slipstream" mechanic. That's how quickly you'll run them down if you're actually driving worth a damn.

In fact, my only major gripe is with the music. Maybe Nintendo's F-Zero X spoiled me back in the day, because even now I'd rather have rock and metal to race to. But the controls are solid, the gameplay is solid, the tracks all look great, I just wish the music was different. And that the engines were louder, so I could hear them over the music and the screeching tires.

In all, I feel like I've gotten more than $10USD out of this game. If a track editor is coming, well, I'll see what I can do about recreating some of the tracks from the old SNES F-Zero, just for the sheer hell of it.

And if vehicle mods(as in, car replacements) are already a thing, and we're getting a track editor down the road, why not get Workshop support to streamline the mod downloading and activation process?

In addition to my earlier post, I just bought Horizon Chase Turbo and after playing that for a while, I can say that HCT is a far, FAR better game. The controls are so much easier to get to grips with and have a proper analog feel, the opponents nowhere near as fast and hard to pass (and won't zoom away from you at the start unless you mess up the start), and bumping into them will not send your car flying (although colliding with the track-side objects will).

HCT feels like a proper late 80s/early 90s racing game should feel. It's got the vibe of Lotus Esprit Challenge and Jaguar XJ220, both great Amiga games. And it looks like there is far more stuff to unlock in it (and will actually give me chance to) than Slipstream too.

So if you're still agonising over which game to get, even at double the price, Horizon Chase Turbo is a much better game than Slipstream.

Also check out MY 1980's DASHBOARD - at $2 that game is an absolute steal and is so simple to play yet so damn addictive! That definitely has the feel of an early-mid 80's racing game.

Incorrect split-screen multiplayer will be an added feature for slip stream ^^

Looking at the screenshots, HCT looks more like Virtua Racing with the flat shaded polys, so more of a mid 90's game. Slipstream looks more like a Super Scaler emulation so mid-late 80's.

Haven't bought either game yet, but after reading about these games I did fire up Lotus II for the Amiga on my MiST FPGA. That game is bloody hard. Still plays great though, after all these years.

Horizon Chase Turbo is a port of the mobile title.

Horizon Chase is a port of a mobile game. It still feels like a mobile game. To describe it quickly: it's Top Gear but with pointless collectable tokens and fuel consumption. No drift, only small repetitive closed tracks. Decent on mobile, for very quick sessions.

Slipstream is more like Outrun and Outrunners: tons of drifting and few crossroads to choose the next stage during the arcade mode. It also has closed tracks (and in future seems like there will be an editor).
