Yes and no. It's a challenge to be sure, but you're not punished a whole lot for failing. If you run out of lives, you don't lose any of your progress, you just go back to the beginning of the level with 5 lives.

Crash trilogy on PS1 PAL version was a lot harder than this one. Still thats the fun, especially when you get the satisfaction of beating them. So i wouldn't give up.

Nope. wonder why people were saying "It's like Dark Souls" :\ I am getting the Colored Gems aka "chaos emeralds" and , it is challenging, but not Hard... yep, the platfomrs in dark levels, are a bit hard to guess the right distance, but controls are enought responsive to adjust the placement in mid air, I played the PSX one, so I have some experience with the game momentum and timings.
levels are not hard to complete. as advice... farm lives in some levels, to not get frustrated to lose some lives in latest levels, cause then, the game now place "extra checkpoints" if you die a lot of times in some areas.
(Anyway, I am still on Crash 1)

Spent 45 minutes yesterday tyring to pass High Road, had no luck so gave up and didn't bother trying till today once I got home from work. Completed the level without losing all my lives on the first try. Completed slippery climb only dying once. As long as you keep calm and not rage like I did yesterday, you'll be good.

High Road is extremely easy.

1. Use the rope to walk on
2. Watch Crash's shadow to gauge distance, do not watch Crash.

Meaby, i get easy "game over" in first level & every game version in first level. It's just need pratices. Lucky you can allways save/load. :3

No, my memory is correct, but the way you wrote: "In the original Crash 1 game, you only had one chance at doing the bonus stages. If you failed it, you had to restart the entire level. Also if you died after hitting a checkpoint in a level, you destroy your chances of getting any Gem (even clear)..."

I felt implied that in the remake, dying after hitting a checkpoint still enabled you to get the gem. You're allowed to die in bonus stages after hitting a checkpoint, but in the regular level after hitting a checkpoint, dying means you can't get the gem without restarting the entire level.
IN THE ORIGINALS
you hit a checkpoint and die, you restart the level.
you die in a bonus stage you restart the level (BOXES IN THE BONUS STAGE COUNT)
you die in a bonus stage after hitting a checkpoint, i THINK you have to restart the level as well
IN THE REMAKE
you die at all, no restarting the level (unless going for a colored gem)
that being said if you did die in the originals you theoretically COULD still get the gem if you backtracked through the level and went on to not die. because if you died it would reset all the boxes, its just simpler to restart the level
The boxes in the bonus rounds are NOT needed in order to get the gems in the original PS1 version. And to get the gem you can't lose a life at all, has nothing to do with checkpoints.

what I mean, is that this game is obviously "adjusted" to be less stressing, I remember in the original, checkpoints did not record the crates you have so far, it only bring you back to that point... etc.
and have to do with checkpoints, now the game add "extra checkpoints" if you die a lot in some areas... unless i missed that from the original version... has passed long. XD

The High Road and Road To Nowhere weren't a problem for me, you can walk on the rope, Vicarius made it easier.
Slippey Climb it's really the problem, man, used a trick to make the perfect run affordable, i wrote a topic about it, you can look for ''colored gems'.

Toxic Waste is the easiest colored gem to earn, and it's the most important, cause the blue gem is required in 3 levels (Rolling Stones, Cortex Power and Jaws Of Darkness). The trick moment is the 2 final barrel throwers, the first one throws 2 rolling barrels and 1 bouncing barrel, the last shots bouncing barrels only, Pay attetion to some marks on the ground, it's a hint where the bouncing barrels hit, as long as you don't place Crash on the mark, the bouncing barrels won't hit you.

Rockhard. Even harder than the original ones.

Yes. Crash 1 at least, especially if going for colored gems. I recommend cheating to get those and only get the white gems legit. Otherwise, beat the game first and cheat for the colored gems afterward: you only need them to see the good ending, like the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1

Nah the game is too soft. Look at Crash.

No, they're not super easy like nowadays games but are far from old school hard as well. Perfectly suitable for all ages.
