Competitive matchmaking cooldowns

A note from Support about in-game cooldowns

Player abandons*, AFKing, excessive kicking and suiciding, and teamkilling result in an undesirable experience for all of the other players in the game.

Our system is designed to limit the negative impact of users who repeatedly abuse these systems. If you perform these actions, Classic Competitive will be unavailable for a period of time.

Cooldown levels:

1: 30min
2: 2 hours
3: 24 hours
4: 7 days

How does my cooldown reset?

The rules are as follows: every cooldown increases the offense level by one level and after cooldown expires and a clean week goes by the offense level goes down by one level. First level offenders receive a 30 min cooldown, second level = 2 hr, third level = 24 hr, fourth and higher levels = 7 days. Here's an example: A player reaches offense level 4 and gets their first 7 day cooldown on Jan 1, it expires on Jan 8 -- this means player can play, but their offense level stays at 4 for the duration of one more week. If player commits a competitive offense on Jan 8 then offense level is increased to level 5 and player is penalized with another 7 day cooldown. That cooldown expires on Jan 15 -- again, this means that player can play, but their offense level stays at level 5 for the duration of one more week. So, after the clean week goes by on Jan 22 the offense level goes down by one level to level 4. Committing a competitive offense on Jan 22 will increase it again to level 5 and assign a 7 day cooldown according to the rules listed above.

Essentially if you got your second or third 7 day cooldown in a row this means you need to have two or three clean weeks after it expires before it goes down to offense level 3 which is penalized with a 2 hr cooldown (editorial note: should be 24 hours, - KillahInstinct).

Clarification regarding abandons
* If you abandon and don't make it back within the start of the next round, the system will also give you a cooldown. It's not able to differentiate between accidental or disconnects on purpose.

No, it can be a timing issue - you are reconnecting and meanwhile the timer expires or the new round starts (or whatever the trigger is) and you still get banned.

Heck, I believe the reconnect button is there even 5 minutes later in some cases. But you only have 3 minutes to reconnect.

I was CD'd for 7 days because I shot my teammate who clearly was AFK and DERANKING in solo matchmaking. I did so just to get the bomb. The guy didn't talk or cooperate with my team. I also tried to kick him, but it seemed like some of my teammates denied kicking that player for no apparent reason (probably also deranking). This is so ♥♥♥♥, beacause we were losing by 0-4 at the time, and I did not want to derank. My team was also talking ♥♥♥♥ to me, so now I'm clearly upset about this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happening to ME and ME only. Please remove this ridicoulus CD.

There are some major flaws in this system. which should be addressed rather then having a bunch of people complain for example any steam errors. I personally have had steam disconnect me from secure servers and they guided me to do a whole bunch of things and test each one individually. In result I got a 7 day ban for abandoning the match (That's pretty ridiculous.) And for team killing and/or shooting team mates, deliberate team killing/shooting yes ban them without a doubt but from time to time a team mate will get in the way and you may tag them and the result of that tag will mean you killed them. Now I don't know if it's just me but people with their infinite wisdom of retardation who decide it'll be a good idea and get in the middle of the crossfire and end up being killed my friendly fire should be getting the ban. I've had some kids (literally kids) who do this deliberately as a "troll" and then I get the ban. It's sad to be honest. There should be a system in place that recognizes these little things and penalizes those who are actually in the wrong. These points I've mad will most likely be blown off and and comments will be made such as "we can't change the system" and all that but the makes of this game can change the system. We, the customers, bought the game deserve our voices and opinions to be heard and taken into consideration. Now let me reiterate, I'm not saying unban everyone who's done anything wrong. I'm saying look at what's happened and improve the system so all these complaints can stop and we can all be happy. Kind of like having our cake and eating it. Cheers.

I do agree, along with the bot algorithms. I got trapped in a corner by a bot and I killed him because I was like "No big deal, it's just a bot. More harm is being done to the person with the only kills in the game being trapped in the corner while my whole team dies." Honestly the system needs to be upgraded. No one likes it. If people are having a problem with someone, they should be able to kick them, which is why I don't like how it has to be a unanimous vote from the other 3 players for the person to get kicked. Then if someone is queued up with the troller, the troller can't get banned. It's stupid. Also, it's stupid how the system is automated such that all bans are irreversible like stated above. If you're wrongly banned for 7 days, you have to live with it. I actually hate their automated system.

when i play normal matches no ping but when i play competitive i get smashed with ping i want my cooldown to be removed because it's not my fault i try to play but i always get lag

today i was playing a comp. match and the server's ping wasnt good to my country so as a result i tried to reconnect but guess what
the game doesnt let me reconnect because of my high ping which is because of the bad server
i reported the server btw and please remove the ban its not my fault

it means you broke a lot of other rules and stacked your ban level

you have 3 mins to make it back or you get punished, but it will let you finish the game if you reconnect in 5 mins but you get punished

everyone has to follow the same rules and most players never make it past a 2 hour ban so you guys are doing something wrong

learn from your mistakes and fix the issue thats causing you to lose connection or it will keep happening

How can I learn from my mistakes when I play with 3 of my friends, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ russian kid appears and ruins OUT GAME, one of them is voting to kick that player and I have to be with my friends and vote YES. THE SYSTEM IS ♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS ♥♥♥♥♥♥ UP to get banned like that. I wasn't the one who ASKED my teammates to vote for the kick. I was just a person who voted yes just like them. THIS IS ♥♥♥♥. 7 DAYS FOR ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ NOTHING!

Personaly I think the whole system is broken, its inconsistent (maybe to stop people who do these things intentionaly?) doesnt make sense and is way too harsh. I recently have gotten 3 7 day bans because I have been kicked by my team. This one really annoys me because I had done NOTHING to be kicked, they just did it for the giggles, none of them got a cooldown for kicking too many players (even though I have for kicking a single person) and I got a 7 day ban. This has happened THREE times with no more than gap of 3 days between them. I have had 5 WEEK LONG cooldowns in a row (again with no more than a gap of 3 days between them) so I have to wait a week for each to go down (AFTER my bans finish?) so 5 weeks, so 5 games a day (not much at all) which means 35 games a week, 175 games total without getting kicked, teammates running into your molotov, kicking an afk person, a VOLVO server breaking down (nothing to do with us), our internet connection cutting out, our computer crashing, just so we can play without worrying if we will be able to play tomorrow? It's ludicrous.
This system needs to be fixed. This system needs to be less harsh. This system needs to be destroyed and re-created. We pay Valve millions, from skins, in copies of the game, in campaigns, in cases keys, and in buying games from steam, yet, they still will not invest some of that money into creating a better gaming experience, but will keep the system that has been broken since it was created.

This system is designed to make more people buy more copies of the game in order to get around this ban, so volvo can get MORE money and it's working.
