A Valve Developer is answering on twitter to some of our questions

So we're here again. Mr. John McDonald from Valve is answering a few questions on his Twitter right now and I'll be putting everything together here, same format from the past week.

If you guys want, he also answered a few questions during this past week and I can gather those too.

His answer on for how long he has been working on CS:GO:
Two and a half years. For me, I take stock of what other teams are up to at the end of the year to figure out if other teams have more needs than my current team.

I was on TF in 2015 and it seemed like CSGO had some valuable problems to work on. Source
His answer on the problems related to grenade hit detection:
This problem is shockingly hard to do correctly in 3D games. So many weird cases that just make things surprisingly painful. E.g. consider super thin walls.

I actually think it's the best it's ever been, despite the fact that there are certainly still some lingering problems.

His answer on why CS:GO bans won't use hardware ID:
I think you've described the problem there exactly. When someone cheats, we do permanently ban their account. But banning them is hard. Banning these doesn't work:

IP address, hardware, payment information, email, ...

The internet makes this super tricky. Source
His answer if it ever will be a system to the community vote on the next feature to be worked on by Valve:
Probably not.

Our goals don't exactly align. Believe it or not, our goals are delivering maximum value to all customers of CSGO, now and for the future. Some of those customers may not yet be playing the game.

But current players (correctly!) care more about right now. Source
His answer on the possibility of adding ubershader on CS:GO and their opinion on performance:
Totally have considered it. Our engine doesn't really express things the way modern GPUs would prefer.

We are mostly happy with where performance is, but that route is very appealing if do something that needs more headroom.

His answer on his opinion on the idea of a seasonal format for CS:GO:
So this is 100% my personal opinion...

I don't really love seasons. I know OW had made use of them, but to me they wound up being a place for me to check out and then not return. I don't know if there's a different implementation that fixes that...

His answer if he personally plays CS:GO:
I do play, but mostly just at work. I probably have around 1k hours played.

I have only a few hours on my public account. I should fix that but it may be harder now than it was before. 😀

I have around 3k hours in tf2 and 5k in Q3A. I'm a little older. Source
His AMA ended a bit earlier than the planned, so I'll be gathering the other answers he gave in the last week.

His answer on launch options:
Best launch options are no launch options. They are the most heavily tested by the dev team. Source
His answer on how Valve work:
This is a common misconception about Valve.

Yes, we choose what to work on. But we hire ppl who choose to work on the thing that contributes the most customer value. So we all choose to work on a thing not strictly because it's interesting-but because it creates customer value. Source
His answer on who from Valve go to the Majors:
To be clear, the folks that attend the majors from Valve aren't reps. It's Ido, Brian, Gautam, Vitaliy, Matt, and other members of the development team.

His answer on the demo playback issues that could break other things if they work on it:
It's not that we can't fix it--it's merely that we need to be really careful when doing so
