Entangled reduces Defense by 75%. It ends when the unit succeeds at a strength check.
Paralyzation also prevents ranged attacks and normal spellcasting, and reduces Defense to 0. It has a fixed duration measured in rounds; from the Mind Blast ability it's usually 1-3 rounds, from the spell it's usually 20-40 rounds.
In both cases, innate casters can still cast spells.
Vineshield is good for a thug or sc because it greatly reduces the number of pixel mans who attack. Those vined do not get an attack. This both reduces the chance of a lucky hit and reduces the amount of harassment which reduces defence. Large single combatants are vulnerable to slow chip damage and harassment. An alternate is awe from the shield or other sources to reduce attacks. Sometimes it's better to take a shield that kills the attackers like charcoal (undead) or scutatus (vulnerable to lightning).
I learned that with my Golden Bull Immobile Pretender, he got swarmed. And despite the high armor and the physical resistances he still got chipped to death. Took him long enough though.
