Spells that help fight fire magic?
So I just lost 1000 troops to over 100 mages that are hiding inside of fort, it is low level ubar mages, and I can't seem to get any spell out fast enough to kill them, they cast body ethereal first and then just spam fire spells, what is the best counter as helheim? I was thinking of just crashing the world economy with dwarves for the constant storm effect, but does that also stop them from being able to cast fire spells?

Anyways I think mass flight could probably do the trick. I believe arrow fend does help against stuff like fire darts but I am not entirely sure. Rain is a big spell to cast as it will make the enemy mages put out less evocations but you don't have water access naturally. Keep in mind while 1000 troops is great to break the walls down, you can just send in 5 commanders equipped with items that give them protection against fire, have them cast self flight, and then they can just attack rear. Against Ubar you might need shock resist too.

In fact there is pretty much never any reason to storm forts with your entire army. If the enemy has a large army in the fort you can usually starve them out / force them to attack you out of the fort, and if they just have research mages then you can send in a small group of elite units / commanders do do the job.

A bunch of skelespammers can also probably beat the fire mages, just place them far in the back and make sure they cast air shield / mistform / ironskin so random arrows don't snipe one of them by luck.

What nation are you? If you're using so many troops, then you're going about it wrong- consider getting a commander with fire resist items and a magic weapon, and sending him to kill the mages.

You did cast Rain, right? If you are fighting Ubar you presumably are in EA, and since you have access to the dwarf spell you are one of Vanheim, Helheim of Niefelheim.
Niefelheim can cast that trivially, for the other two nations you'd need to rely on empowering, indies or events.

Thank you everyone, this is good advice, I am going to try out rain, I was having trouble with Ubar because of a giant army that now is split up into a few pretty big ones, and his main group of casters is separated, I figured the chaff would help but instead they just all died. I'll just empower a few low level priests with water gems and set them to cast rain.
Your best bet if he's relying on a doomstack is to use thugs to raid him and ruin his economy. Ubar doesn't rely on sacreds, so he's paying through the nose for his army. Use Vanherses with a few magic items sneak into their backline and take poorly defended provinces and force him to split his army.

I like that a lot, that's a good idea, I've been using one of my higher death mages to mass harvesters of sorrow and sending them to follow his army, but that sounds like an even better way to shut them down fast. They did have an army of 3k with a ton of different summons earlier, but after casting melancholia on them 2 times and a handful of harvesters following them around they are down to 1.5k total it looks like, but that is also after like 3 in-game years. Also wherever the harvesters are not I've been spamming draconians to grab all around him. I like the idea of sneaking around with some thugs though since when the draconians run into 1 ifrit it destroys them completely.
Build to counter his ifrit and have a thug ready to kill him!

Thank you for your advice! I ended up destroying ubar pretty hard, for anyone looking for a way as EA Helheim to counter Ubar, salt helps a lot vs the Ifrits and you can use your pretender to cast Streams from Hades to get a water mage, but your pretender has to have some points in water. Also the legendary 2h weapon for air mages "Tempest" creates a permanent storm but it does create rust on your soldiers. Casting rain also can cause rust.
