Dominions 5

Dominions 5

This is annoying, the auto-generated god-names for AI factions are often weird.
like one pretender from an AI faction was called "gravespittle"...
sounds like the name of a random soldier under greyworm's command from GoT.
Would be nice if English words are excluded from random-name generation.

It's not pretender specific; rather, it's one of the random undead names, which also include things like "Deathtongue", "Plaguehope", "Gravesoul" and "Orphaneater". I don't disagree these names are a bit ridiculous...

Hmm. There is just like Richard the Lionheart and Henry II Curtmantle

I find them ok. I mean real world gods (given Dom is heavily based in real world myth) were often bizarre.
The Greek god ‘Pan’ comes to mind who (on top of sounding like a kitchen utensil) runs around having sex with everything including animals.

The premise is any god can try to become the new supreme God. I’d imagine Gravespittle is probably low down on the pantheon. Maybe just bellow Sheela Na Gigs (possible pagan goddess, look them up it’s... bizarre) and Cardea (Goddess of Door Hinges), but he deserves his chance at glory!

It would be believable, if it was a Semitic word that means "spiting on a gravestone", "gravespittle", in English, is just comical.

"Gravespittle", in English, can mean "foul gunk is oozing from the mouth", which seems pretty fitting for the walking dead. ;)

Like Zonk said, the generic Undead names are based on pure fantasy and are a throwback to table-top RPGs. They're corny in the same way "Vecna the Undying" is corny.

You think something is weird and not realistic at all. Then you read couple of history books and find out much more weird and unrealistic events are very common in the history.

I suspect OP's issue is that of the names are silly and merely disgusting rather than intimidating.

With stuff like "Gravespittle", "Wormlove" or "Leperlove", I can't really disagree.
On the other hand names like "Chillwind", "Gravesoul", "Nightbane" sound fine - I mean they're still something you'd expect to find in goth poetry, but they're creepy without being silly...
I wouldn't mind if the undead name list was changed a bit.

Agree with the OP. Not a pressing issue, and definitely a matter of taste, but that particular name list could use some work.

Orphaneater, too.
Sure, it's unpleasant, creepy and ominous - and there is a pretender title that's "Eater of Children"- but it also sounds self-disparaging, we can imagine other undead making jokes such as "So you're not dangerous enough to kill adults or people who have parents?"

It could be worse, you could be playing multiplayer games and dealing with gods named after Game of Thrones characters or some weird stuff like that. Literally almost impossible for me not to name a premade pretender something stupid in this game. Some examples:
Paddywack (Demilich)
Divide by Zero (Vastness)
Hungry Boi (Devourer)
Angry Face (Baphomet)
Bad Head Day (Teteo Inan)
Giant Dragon Thing or Whatever (Drakkon)

Pretty sure I gave up trying to think of a name for the last one.

I like them.

In multiplayer I have seen Pretender names such as Big Stone Penis which are much worse as mentioned above.

I would not like that at all! How stupid, exclude english words, what a completely silly thing to say!

I think the words are perfectly okay and I quite like a lot of them Dominions is supposed to be dark like orphaneater, I imagine the god earned that one by hunting down specially orphaned children and having a banquet of them.

Look into the history of religions and they are very, very dark. A lot would be viewed as completely and totally evil by today's standards doing unspeakable things. Even the biggest religions today are historically soaked in blood, death and despicable acts. Never mind the pagen religions.

The irony of complaining about weird names on a forum where almost everybody uses a weird name...
Imperialus Mar 26, 2021 @ 6:10pm
MP names are pretty much always ridiculous and memey. In my current game, there is a Break Dancing the the 80's, Sneeds Feed and Seed, Otter Nonsense, and my own pretender Side o' Bacon with his prophet "part of a complete breakfast"...

The other players are boring and playing with randomly generated names.
