What does "Carnutes" mean?
What it says. Not sure what it refers to in Marverni's magic site name or their great boar of carnutes. I thought it means "deep forest", "thicket", or something like that, but searching gives only name of some tribe.

A little more analysis of the meaning of the name 'Carnutes' from Historyfiles.co.uk:[www.historyfiles.co.uk]
The tribe's name is somewhat problematic. The first part, 'carn', means 'meat', which seems unlikely. Going back a little further, the proto-Celtic root is *karno-, meaning the hoof of an animal (a horse, deer, cow, goat or sheep, for example). Could this be a reference to Cernunnos the horned god?

If so then a good guess for the meaning of the tribe's name is that they were the followers of this god. The alternative spelling for Cernunnos is Carnonos, which is perfect common Celtic, with 'carn' meaning 'horn', plus a plural suffix, and '-os', which is a male singular nominative suffix. The name means 'horns' as a name for a male individual.
So, a possible translation for "Carnutes" is "Followers of Cernunnos".
